We’re finally moving to our own site!

I made the official Tora Steals Things site at the end of 2018, and now that we’re coming onto the comic’s 4th year anniversary in March, I think it’s time for all future updates to live there.

Having its own site means having more control over the comic’s presentation, cleaner organization for the archives, better handling of comments, and just an overall greater reading experience for the comic!

What happens to this account?

I’ll still be here to post reminders about comic updates and other announcements related to the comic! So stick around for those - I know it’s hard to remember when webcomics update ;) and I’d definitely appreciate a reblog or two of those updates (maybe just one, let’s not be silly)

I’ll be opening questions so you can send me asks here or over at griffinblogsgw2 as per usual.

I’ll be leaving the comic archive on here alone for now, but I’ll likely be removing them in the future, so enjoy it while you can ;)

Thoughts on The Early Years Arc

I've had a lot of thoughts on the recent comic arc I've been working on for Tora Steals Things lately that I've wanted to articulate for some time now. This isn't a mission statement or anything, just me organizing my own thoughts on it.

The more I work on The Early Years Arc, the more I realize it's not supposed to be in Tora Steals Things. Don't get me wrong, I think it's some of the best comic work I've done so far, and it's the first time I've ever seen people so invested in my work! I'm actually quite happy with it! ...But it doesn't belong here.

This becomes more and more obvious to me as I work on it. The biggest signs being that many of the characters and plots introduced in this arc are not revisited in future planned episodes. I have a list of stories for this comic and almost all of them could be done and would read fine without knowing Tora's backstory.

Terin exists in only two or three stories after this arc. The Mute is literally in none. Baya and Tora's old guild are never mentioned again.

And it seems odd in retrospect because Terin at the very least is setup to have a dynamic with Tora that begs to be explored.

So how did this happen?

And the answer is, the backstory and most of the new cast introduced belong to a different project: Stolen Gods. And it's in Stolen Gods where Terin and Tora's relationship takes center stage, where Baya's effects on Tora's life are more evident, where Tora's past looms in the form of traumatic scars he has to work to heal.

Even the backstory itself is, in retrospect, not designed to be told the way it is right now. Tora's backstory is massive and was meant to be shown in pieces over a much longer narrative, not dropped all in one go. I mean I really tried but even with the episode being as long as it is, I can't cover everything and it would be exhausting to do so.

At the very least, I did try and make Tora's backstory in GW2 different enough from his SG version so that I felt I wasn't telling the exact same story, but that honestly doesn't address the real problem: it just doesn't belong here.

Tora Steals Things isn't Stolen Gods, and I think this current arc may have been done as my own subconscious desire to work on the latter. I'm still going to finish it, mind you, and I'm very happy with how it's coming along.

After this though, I'm returning to what Tora Steals Things is supposed to be: a tribute to my times in this game with my friends, and the absurd stories inspired by it.

(There'll still be drama, don't worry. Just not the backstory stuff if I can help it)
