3h animation speed battle on the theme of ‘martial arts’. Referred to this video for reference.

Following the body mechanics of the ‘tornado kick’ is really fascinating; I hope at least come of it comes through in what I had time to draw! Some process comments below...

In terms of animation, this is I think definitely helping me a bit in drawing loose and feeling out a motion, but my work still doesn’t have the ease and fluidity of the really good speed battlers.

In this case, I ended up animating this on constant 3s, and I think I did a reasonable job at keeping propotions and perspective consistent so the animation does read, but the spacing is very even so it feels a bit mechanical. I couldn’t really rely on the video reference for timing and spacing since it jumped in and out of slow motion, so I just eyeballed it. At first I used a narrower 16:9 frame and tried to have the camera follow the character, but without a background to anchor us it just made the motion feel stop-start. So instead I went for this static camera, and lined up the character by their feet. I wanted a sense of building motion.

This kind of motion would normally expect a lot more inbetweens, and I think it would feel better if I drew them and spent abit more time tying this down. I might do that at some point (for this and various other speed battles), but the real goal of this is to develop sufficient intuition that I can create the energy I want even at the rough stage.

But that’s cool, it just means I’ve got something to work at! Only way out is through, as they say. Perhaps it’s time I did some studies.
