Nightmarish, edgy, beatiful, and...

Torn Space Theater's new season opening show Mud just received a four-star reveiw (http://www.buffalonews.com/gusto/theater-reviews/nightmarish-8216mud8217-repulses-and-oddly-attracts-at-torn-space-20140327) from Ted Hadley on GUSTO! "Love it or hate it", Hadley worte, "read into it what you wish, is nevertheless what live theater is all about. The play instructs you, changes you, repulses you, moves you, oddly attracts you".

Indeed. Although "nightmarish" is the word that Hadley used in the title, more thoughts were inspired as we collected feedbacks and gathered ideas from our audience. We are stunned by the variety and creativity of our audience and we now share some of them below:

"Unsettling, isolated, cruel, hopeless". One audience left these phrases on the survey sheets. "...But eerily beautiful."

"Great use of space and lightening."

"Enjoy the videography, especially the images of the words, seemingly passing through the characters's minds"

How about the characters? Lloyd gets a lot of applause and sympathy. Mae, "she has zero strength and I want to punch her in the face."

"...The counterpoint Henry played to Lloyd and Mae was a perfect balance in a difficult character study."

A rehearsal trailer for Torn Space Theater's new season's opening performance Mud. Mae, born in a dark, cramped, and filthy room, always craves a decent and intellegent life. She thought her hollowness is momentarily filled with dignity when Henry, an educated but lukewarm outsider, steps into her room and stays, but soon discovered herself in the endless rivalry between Henry and her childhood companion Lloyd. Bearing the metaphor of the starfish, Mae gathers all her strength before the final leap towards the faint hope that shines and burns her out.

Irene Maria Fornes' Mud, directed by Dan Shanahan and starring Bonnie Jean Taylor, Patrick Moltane, and Willie Judson, will be on Torn Space Theater's stage from March 20 to April 13. Check this video taken from Torn Space Theater's rehearsal of the America Play staged reading on February 22, 2014. The characters delved into the most violent and mournful moment in the U.S. history -- the assasination of President Lincoln -- and tried to restore it through putting together scattered memory jigsaws both from themselves and from their fathers. The hero, when digging a deep hole into the past, encountered not only shadows and ghosts but also his true identity.
