With the release of 2010’s Romanticism, 2012’s Revisionist, 2014’s A Little Help EP and 2015’s Midnight Century, the Toronto-based post-punk act The Black Fever— Shoe (vocals, guitar), Pat Bramm (bass, backing vocals) and Dan Purpura (drums) — have firmly established a sleek and propulsive take on post punk that focuses on melody…

Toronto
I’ve been thinking a lot about this city. I fell in love with a girl in Toronto. She fell out of love with me in Toronto. It was the first time I ever had my heart broken, the first time a relationship left me feeling defeated and hopeless. She said she hated how many cigarettes I smoked, so I started smoking more. She said she loved my short hair, so I grew it out. She said I didn’t communicate enough, I shut down even more. I cut off all contact with friends, started drinking alone in my room, pretty much shut myself off completely. It took me a minute, but I found a job and slowly started making time to take care of myself. I drove to Toronto with my girlfriend not too long ago–spur of the moment, wanted to show her the city, because despite the bad memories, I’ll always have so much love for Toronto–Dundas Square, Kensington Market, The Monkey’s Paw, the white elephant sculpture on Yarmouth, the incredibly easy/clean public transportation.. I drove down the street that my ex and I stayed on and it was completely different and the park that was right down the road had been paved over. The convenience store I used to make midnight beer runs to, didn’t exist anymore. It was bittersweet for sure. It’s weird how things really do happen for a reason–almost four years later, I realized that my ex was emotionally manipulative and abusive in so many subtle ways that went unnoticed to me at the time. I’m in a totally different place than where I was back then, but I still find myself questioning thoughts I have, making sure they are my own and not based off of someone else’s influence. It’s weird how someone who isn’t in your life any longer and hasn’t been for a long time, can still affect you.
