Small inconveniences

Arcann’s pleasant dreams were interrupted by something sharp poking his back. He tried to shift his position only to have the object jab him between the shoulder blades. Sleepily, he groaned and blindly fumbled among the sheets for the offending object. It was an iridescent green stone roughly in the shape of a triangle. He sighed as he leaned back on the pillow and stared at the ceiling. It wasn’t the first time to be woken up by random objects left forgotten in bed. At least the stone’s edges were blunt, which was more than he could say about the jewelry wire that had nicked his leg the week before, or the etching needle…

Arcann’s fingers closed around the stone and he couldn’t help but mutter a few choice expletives under his breath at the inanimate object before setting it aside. His bed hadn’t always been this minefield of scattered hazards, but then, it had never before been shared with anyone. He glanced at the sleeping figure on his left. He knew she was the culprit and yet the moment his gaze settled on her form all the irritation drained away.

It was a crush, or so his mother said. It was fleeting. It wouldn’t last. It was only the initial stage of love and the intensity of it would subside…

Arcann reached out to touch her face gently. He never thought he would be able to experience such a blissfully mundane existence. He should be dead. He deserved death.

And yet here he was.

She was his second chance at life, at happiness, at everything…

“… no… too early… damn radishes… five more minutes…” she mumbled as she burrowed deeper under the covers and against his chest. He cracked a smile and held her close against him.

He wouldn’t trade this for any throne.
