Total Heroes Series 1 New 52 The Flash Action Figure Pics And Reviews.
Hey Speed Readers,
Mattel's latest attempt at a six-inch line comes in the form of Total Heroes. Whereas the previous attempt, DC Universe Classics, were rather varied in selection and sported a more collector-friendly look and feel, these figures are clearly targeted towards a younger market and look to be as retail-friendly as possible when it comes to selection. A-list characters, Superman, Batman and Aquaman were also released in the first wave with Green Lantern to follow soon.
Overall, I have to say that this figure is not quite as bad as I initially thought it would be. Still, featuring fewer joints for articulation, less sculpting and sporting a more cartoony art style these figures aren't quite the successor to DC Universe Classics that we hoped for.
However at a price point of $9.99 (10 dollars less than DC Universe Classics were at retail when the line ended) I have to say that for what it is these figures are pretty solid and a great value. They appear to be extremely sturdy and should be able to hold up to some pretty rough play.
The look and overall style of these figures put me in the mind of the Ed McGuinness-inspired action figures released by DC Direct a few years back. Those figures also had a bulkier, uniform look to them, and featured minimal sculpted details. As a result DC Direct pumped out quite a few series of them for what I'm assuming minimal cost. I imagine this is what Mattel is aiming for: something with minimal tooling and high retailability that is extremely versatile.
I've posted some comparison pics with the aforementioned Ed McGuinness-inspired DC Direct figures as well as Mattel's DC Universe Classics and DC Collectibles' latest New 52 Flash releases. This figure isn't going to be seamlessly blending in with past 6" lines; Total Heroes are a bit shorter than DC Universe Classics and as you can see in the comparison pics a lot bulkier.
I don't really see myself picking up any of the other releases in this wave. I've invested a lot of time and resources in my existing DC Universe collection and these guys just don't fit in. At all. So back to cherry picking we go. Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad figure, it just isn't for me.
