CW: bullying and someone sorta makes fun of another character’s ED
The idea of Mount Horizon felt anything but comforting, no matter how much your mother tried to convince you otherwise. This would be your fourth school in three years, and it was hard to believe much would change.
Throughout three years, there were countless incidents of teasing, tormenting and bullying at the hands of classmates ,and a handful of teachers. Whether it was digs about your appearance, rumours, threats or even physical abuse it seemed to loom over you wherever you went. Another school, another retelling of the same tired story.
So far, into the two weeks of attending Horizon, there was little difference. By your second morning Shelby Merrick, a blonde girl;one of your fellow cliffhangers, had already begun with snide remarks and by dinner that evening they had devolved into shameless torments. Two weeks of the girl’s comments being shot at you whenever she could squeeze them in. Of course you’d dealt with worse , and you were hardly her only target, but it still hurt. Like reawakening an ache in your bones, the cold, unsettled feeling , the lurch in your stomach every time her mouth opened to spit new venom never left. No matter how much you’d been subjected to it.
Which is why it wasn’t a surprise when the comments started up again at dinner the friday of your second week. Sat next to Daisy, one of the only people you’ve truly gotten close to, making light conversation. Your metal tray sat in front of you, a plate of pasta stacked atop of it, along with a carton of fruit juice, and a stale cookie you could break a tooth on. Stabbing some pasta onto your fork, you started eating, listening to daisy’s’ views on some band’s latest album, when a voice interrupted her as she took a breath.
“The way you’re eating is making me nauseas. God stop it for us if not for yourself”
Your eyes glancing across the table, meet Shelby’s two deep blue ones, a taunting glare reflecting in them. A few quiet chuckles rippled throughout the table, heat rushing into your cheeks, looking back at Daisy , you missed the sympathetic look that flickered across Scott’s face silently observing the interaction. Daisy somewhat awkwardly, continued. Her train of thought being interrupted numerous times throughout the meal by Shelby’s remarks, as you fought to ignore them.
“Maybe you and Juliette should buddy up, God knows she’s got enough urge to purge for the both of you”
For the upteenth time, her voice rang out with a mocking tone. The fork you were holding clattered on the plate, standing quickly and pushing yourself away from the table and storming off, out of the dining hall, chilled air hitting your cheeks as the doors opened and closed behind you. The comments stung more than you’d like to admit, one after another after another, each blow over the past weeks adding up and wearing on your patience. Thoughts reeled through ,quicker than you could register, recounting the past two weeks, memories from the schools prior, and thousands of anxiety inducing thoughts flooded your mind.
Slumping down onto the steps of your cabin and sitting there, arms crossed over your torso. Salty tears starting to drip out of your eyes, and onto your cheeks, gaze trained on the tops of your shoes, lost in thought. Another round of torture at a new school didn’t seem bearable, it felt pathetic, like with every taunt, every dig, a little more confidence got chipped away. And instead of growing back stronger, its as if someone had tried piecing the fragments together with a roll of cellotape that didn’t quite hold it together properly.
As your hand reached up, wiping the tears off of your face with a sniffle only for more to roll on your cheeks within a few seconds, the sound of footsteps against the grass approached . They paused at the base of the stairs ,your head lifting slightly to see who it was, only to be met with Scott Barringer standing in front of you.
“Hey..”
His voice broke the silence of the otherwise deserted campus. You’d spoken to Scott a handful of times before, mainly in especially boring classes or long hikes through the nearby woods. He was nice enough to you, though as a whole he was a little standoffish and closed off, he’d never gone out of his way to be rude to you . One of his hands reached up, rubbing the back of his neck as he stood in front of you not making proper eye contact.
“Hi”
Your voice came out a croaky and somewhat strangled, quickly wiping any tears off your face and trying to look somewhat put together. But the redness of your puffy eyes was still noticeable. Your eyes trailed over him as he moved to sit a couple feet from you on the steps.
“Are you uhh.. are you okay?”
You paused for a moment, In all honesty , No. you felt anything but okay at the minute. You were fed up of the same treatment and ridicule following you from place to place, in a seemingly inevitable cycle. With a sigh you responded
“I’ll be fine- I’m fine”
Another long paused stretched out between the two of you as you sat , glancing back down at your shoes, Scott wringing his hands out beside you like he didn’t quite know that to say either. After a minute or so he spoke again
“Yknow you shouldn’t listen to the crap that Shelby says— it’s all stupid anyway”.
You nodded, still quietly trying to mop up the tears lingering on your face
“It’s whatever, it just gets tired fast”.
Another sigh left your lips , hands running over your face and then resting in your lap. Scott’s head turned to look at you.
“No it’s not whatever, you shouldn’t have to put up with her acting like that because she’s insecure. You deserve better than that.”
He said firmly, almost irritated , it wasn’t hard to see he was bothered by the situation. It was somewhat surprising though. He never seemed to show too much care for other people, not above bare minimum. You waited a moment before looking up at him, his brow was creased ever so slightly.
“Thanks ,Scott. It’s nice of you to say that”
You responded softly, with a small grateful smile. Even if his kindness was out of pity, like you suspected, it was a refreshing change. He spoke again quickly after.
“I mean it. you’re nice, ‘nd smart, and y’know you’re pretty— all of that stuff. You shouldn’t let Shelby treat you like you’re not.”
That bit caught you off guard. The sincerity in his voice didn’t hold any amount of sarcasm or mocking, no hidden jokes or cons hid beneath his words. You looked over him at what felt like an eternity, mainly processing what he’d said and wondering what to say next.
“You think I’m pretty and smart?”
You asked with a small smile of amusement lacing your lips, slightly taken aback by the genuineness of his words. He was normally so shut off and guarded it was rare to hear anything from him that wasn’t sarcastic or snarky.
“Yeah — anyone with eyes and a half a brain would agree with me”
He joked, a grin plastered on his face. An airy laugh tumbled past your lips, pressing them into a closed grin and thinking for a moment before speaking.
“Youre really sweet when you want to be. Thank you, for checking on me and all of that— I really appreciate it”
You thanked him voice low and quiet, he gave a short nod in response, and glanced back to the tree line in the distance. Your eyes followed his after a moment, as you sat in the still and comfortable atmosphere, listening to the soft chirping of birds flying into the trees. The moment ruptured at ,what you guessed was , ten minutes later as the dining hall doors swung open. Students began to pour out ,busy chatter bouncing off of them. The wooden steps creaked beside you as Scott rose to his feet , clearing his throat
“Well, I should- I’ll go now I guess. I’ll talk to you later ,yeah?”
He said vaguely gesturing at the direction of his cabin/dorm almost awkwardly, as he slid his hands in his pockets quickly after
“Yeah- yeah definitely, I’ll see you then.”
You nodded, biting back a chuckle starting to stand as well, dusting off the back of your pants as he walked off. His presence being replaced by a handful of other girls filtering into the cabin behind you.
In bed that night you couldn’t help but be a little more hopeful about your situation at Horizon. For the first time in what felt like forever, you had people in your corner. And though your new friendship with Scott was, frankly a little unexpected. You were grateful for it, plus it was hard to deny your interaction hadn’t left you with a warm buzzing feeling in your chest, and a hint of anticipation for when you were next going to speak.
