Okay, I just finished Rose in Chains and I actually really enjoyed it. For some reason it's getting some negative feedback on reddit, but I thought it was good.

Some mild spoilers below, but nothing crazy.

Briony (hate the name) and Toven (name has grown on me) are definitely dramione coded, but very different.

As an older sister who always felt shadowed by her brothers sports career in her youth, I loved the story line including Briony being told to make herself smaller so her brother, as the heir, wouldn't be outshined. Not only that, but she helps him outshine everyone else.

I like that Toven discovers this secret of hers, that she's actually the smarter one. The more powerful one.

Some of the comments about this story said they felt like the characters themselves were empty without the back story of HP. But I think the mystery of the characters and their motives adds to the story.

I love Toven's personality, and genuinely would love to read the story from his perspective more, but that would take away part of the mystery i guess. As I said in my earlier post, he's a posh, sarcastic smart ass and it's perfect.

The most frustrating part of the book was Briony's complete lack of awareness of Toven's true feelings. I actually wrote down "Girl, you're dense" multiple times.

I like that the main villain (voldemort equivalent) was changed to female. I think it adds to the whole men vs women dynamics of the story.

Some said the world building was lacking, but I felt like it was detailed enough to get the overall ambiance without dragging out/feeling TOO detailed. That might just be me though, as I prefer reading dialog and character interaction vs world building/independent descriptions (i actuallt tend to skip ahead on the page bc of this, its frustrating).

Random side note. But, I really like the Hearst Family in this too (Malfoy family equivalent).

Anyway, bummed I have to wait until summer 2026 for book 2/3. (This id why I dont read WIP 😂)

i quite liked this book and i think even if you’re not a dramione reader you’d enjoy it too. however, if you’re the type of reader who loves a good world-building like myself, you may find this one is a bit wonky, so heed my advice.

i hope the sequel will offer a much needed in-depth world expansion that will let this story stand out from its fic-origins.
