Ahhh I had no idea you were on tumblr! I just finished The Ones We Burn and I'm obsessed. And devastated. And giddy.
I preordered the book when it released, but it got buried in boxes when I moved to college... I was 17 when I bought it and living in an unsafe household, and now I'm 22 and in my own place and loving women freely. Even when I wasn't reading this book, just having it in my possession all those years ago was a gentle encouragement. I remember reading the dedication when the book first arrived, and tearing up. This book meant so much to me even before I turned a page, and it means so much to me now. Thank you so much for writing it!
I am on tumblr....unprofessionally and sneakily, haha. Mostly here to look at pretty things and share art, so it's very funny and sweet when readers find me, even though I'm sure my publishers are like "girl why is your pfp your cat" ALAS!!! it's my tumblr and I have been here since I was 12 I can do what I PLEASE!! (also it's a good picture of Puck.....every day I yearn to make it my pfp on all my accounts.)
Thank you so much for the kind words about TOWB <3 I love that it was with you all those years before you read it. I think, sometimes, we pick up a book and choose to crack it open at the exact right moment – that's how Megan Whalen Turner's Thief series was for me. I'd had them for years, and when I finally read them, I was like, HELLO?!
Thank you for the lovely note! And thank you for reading!!
it’s really funny when my 2-3 posts about this SWEAR TO GOD FERAL AT FIRST witch and her princess gf get likes because it’s like. oh. yeah. someone just finished the book/finished rereading it and now they’re insane. Yuppp.
i just want @rebeccamix to know that i loved the ones we burn very very much i literally forgot to eat bc i was so busy squealing and kicking my feet. i have now recommended it to my mom (who taught me witchcraft) and she is very excited :) anyways everyone go read it this was exactly the queer fantasy i needed in my life
Disclaimer: I’m a white omnist, and this is a throwaway account because I don’t wanna get dogpiled on.
The career assassination, cancel culture, and virtue signaling surrounding TOWB is literally insane, especially because the book isn’t even out yet, and the majority of negative reviews are basing their review...on someone else’s review. And some of y’all haven’t heard and/or read about Derek Black, and it shows.
towb fandom really is starved.. anywho. Ronja Mac AnBiard (dnd oc) as well as some Ranka last name censored for spoilers (the ones we burn) angst art soon. give me a moment to cook.
the girls are on my mind girls that nobody else on this blog is aware of except for silly mooties who were there when I first went batshit over this book and I was able to drag them down with me. anywho ramblings after the cutoff. I don’t expect anyone to read the ramblings it’s just me letting the insanity out!!!
OKAY SO FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DONT KNOW- Two years ago, The Ones We Burn dropped November 1st!! I was super hyped bc the author, Rebecca Mix, was constantly shitposting about them like fandoms do their silly yaoi ships. Traumatized witch girl meeting pissy princess and going from enemies to lovers??? FUCK YEAHHH!!! anywho.
I pick up the book sometime around the middle of November from Amazon, convincing my parents bc I just so happened to have a school project on whatever book I wanted!! so, I can say I’ve got one of the initial copies before TOWB became NYT Bestseller (which is huge btw, I’m still not over the fact there’s like NO FANDOM!!! NYT BESTSELLER BUT WHERE ARE MY FELLOW INSANE READERSSSS UGHHH) and am immediately very sane about it. Like I CANNOT put the book down. Ranka had me hooked page one and the antics as her and Amaris went from enemies to CAUTIOUS FRIENDS to friends to lovers??? adore. mwah. peak pacing. like this girl went from “I fucking hate it here ffs I’m just here for my sister figure” to “NONONO WAIT ONGRUM FUCK NO WAIT PLEASE. PLEASE.” over iirc 60 chapters and its. hahehrhtvvvvvw im not sane at alll. I’ve got no fanart no fan content and im so very tempted to just make my own
Hi! I sent the TOWB ask and accidentally switched on anon, lol. Thank you for your reply! I will definitely read it! I try to be very critical about the media I interact with, but this situation seemed very messy. I spent close to 2 hours sifting through reviews on goodreads and then I searched the book on tumblr (which was a mistake) trying to find people who actually read it. I do not discount the reviews from black and Jewish readers that I did find, I just wanted to hear as many relevant opinions as I could before I just went ahead and read the book. Thank you again! Would it be alright if I reblogged your reply to my previous ask?
No worries!! Sorry if my reply seemed aggressive or anything, I'm just tired of people who clearly haven't read the book wrecking it as though it was something the head terf herself had written. It was a very messy situation and I think it was handled incredibly poorly by book twitter (which is why I avoid it).
I... also made the mistake of looking in tumblr search for anyone who had read it (what I saw there only irritated me more tbh) so yeah, it's hard to find legitimate reviews in some places where all the drama was just needlessly spread.
If you want to read the book but are still hesitant, I would recommend seeing if you can get it in a library or finding somewhere you can borrow it until you're sure you want it. I loved the book (I'm a sucker for a lot of YA fantasy books), but I know there were people who didn't enjoy it for genuine reasons like plot of characterisation, and I know I have books that I regret buying because I didn't enjoy them due to characterisation or plot. I will always rec a book that I love, but I also know that the cost of living crisis is real and not everyone can afford a £16 hardback randomly. If you want to straight up buy it though, great!
Also, sure! You can absolutely reblog my reply! If it gets more people to think critically instead of having a knee-jerk reaction to the name of a book that they saw reviews based off someone else's flawed review, then that is important.
