Toxophilite (Ranger Archetype)
You might assume that today’s subject is yet another poison-themed archetype, that is, unless you know your Greek language, in which case, you would realize this is in fact an archery-themed archetype!
While rangers that focus archery are fairly common thanks to it being one of the two core fighting styles associated with the class, but toxophilites, like other archery-themed archetypes we’ve seen, go above and beyond, demonstrating such skill with a bow that their feats seem supernatural in nature.
So great is their skill that they do not just outdo lesser archers, they actively counter them even shooting their projectiles out of the air, protecting themselves and others from ranged assault.
As part of their mastery of the bow, these rangers become especially accustomed to shooting targets that are significantly smaller than themselves, be they smaller creatures or even incoming arrows.
Indeed, by readying a shot, they can attempt to shoot down incoming attacks against themselves or an ally, provided the projectiles are not too massive for an arrow to disrupt.
As they grow in power, they can choose to time their normal shots so they can use one to deflect shots, rather than readying themselves specifically for that purpose.
The most powerful of these toxophilites can even use the deflection to redirect enemy arrows into nearby foes, turning negation into something more.
This archetype is fun if you fully expect to be facing a lot of archers and wish to protect their allies. However, if you’re looking for an archetype that grants more in the way of magical or nonmagical trick shots, there are other options, such as the archer fighter, the arrowsong minstrel, and the eldritch archer magus.
That being said, this archetype does also have the options for an animal companion for you to support from afar with your archery, or the companion bond to further buff your allies from the back lines, so keep that in mind.
While the parallels to Robin Hood are fairly obvious, any sort of master archer of the wild lands could be used for inspiration here, with a variety of different personalities. Might they show up and use archery competitions to have an excuse to come into town though? Certainly.
They say that a great furred man-beast that can outshoot even elves lives in Elbran Forest. However, this is only partly true, the man-beast is actually the ape companion of the true archer, a kobold hermit called Ikras, living alone in exile.
The ghorans do not like to go to war, on account of the limitations of their reproduction. However, when they do fight in masse, they like to use the trees to protect themselves whenever possible. When forced into the open, however, they utilize a “cloud of branches” style, their archers focused on shooting projectiles out of the air, rather than firing upon their foes.
There are few things that enrage the syrinx more than those who can negate their advantages, so while many syrinx spellcasters usually learn projectile-blocking magics, their most skilled archers learn to shoot down incoming arrows.
This line went hard
So far this comic is just Ollie having a midlife crisis while people are getting serially murdered in the background
The more comics I read the more I dislake two-page spreads, and the reason for that is because I often find them difficult to follow with my eyes. They always seem to be too cluttered, so I end up just skimming the art instead of actually looking at it
I'm not sure that I like the look of how one corner of the arrow is on a different page, but the layout of this spread was very interesting. The geometric shapes are neat, but it feels a little odd to me. It's eye-catching, I'm just not sure if it's a good eye-catching
This bold lettering is not it
