Ingredients: cake and a really sad guy, some creepy whumper/stalking vibes

Xavier stared at the envelope Makena had just handed him. It was plain and white, with his name written on the front in handwriting he didn't recognize.

"What the fuck is this?"

Makena crossed her arms, leaning against the wall. "We like to get each other's test subjects little...presents for their birthdays. Today is yours, so this is from one of the other scientists."

"Today is..." Xavier swallowed. Fuck, it was already August. He'd tried to keep track of the date at the beginning of his time here, but he'd lost count at some point. So much time had passed already. He pushed the thoughts aside, tearing open the envelope. It was his fucking birthday.

A standard store-bought birthday card was inside, cheesy joke and all. He glared at the hand-written message inside: Happy Birthday to everyone's favorite chihuahua! Of course Makena talked about him to her colleagues, but the fact that she'd shared that nickname with them stung. But that was nothing compared to what was taped to the left side of the card.

It was a picture of his sister, Mira. She was wearing her favorite sundress, her teal hair in a neat braid, holding a chocolate raspberry ice cream cone, the pier and the sunset out of focus behind her. Xavier knew it well because he'd taken that picture. They'd just been going for an evening walk and gotten ice cream, and she'd asked him to take a photo since it was such a nice night. He'd taken that one, and then they took a selfie together. He was secretly glad the selfie wasn't the picture in the card. He really didn't want to see his old self right now and remember what he'd lost all over again. She'd posted both of them to her social media page, so...wait, fuck-

"Where-where the hell did they get this?!" The though of Makena, of these strangers stalking his sister made his blood boil.

Makena shrugged. "Internet."

"I-don't you dare fucking touch her or I'll-"

"Relax." Makena held up her hands. "We don't have any interest in civilians, okay? They were just trying to get you a nice gift."

"A nice-" his voice caught, fingers gripping the photo tightly. It hurt so much to see her and know that he couldn't be with her, that she had no idea where he was or what he was going through or if he was even still alive. Was she looking at pictures of him, too?

"There's a second part, here." Makena rolled over the little table, a large plastic container on it. "Go ahead."

Xavier set the photo down gently, smoothing the wrinkles his tight grip had made. Hesitantly, he opened the box, expecting...he didn't know, something bad, but instead...it was a cake. The frosting wasn't particularly decorative, so it was probably homemade. There was a fork sitting next to the container, and he couldn't resist picking it up and using it to get a bite of cake. It looked really moist, and that could only mean one thing.

"Tres leches?" he asked, more in slight disbelief than actually asking for information.

"Probably. I didn't make it. But they said you could have the whole thing, and I don't care, so go crazy. If you puke that's on you."

There had to be some kind of trick, right? There was no way he was just going to get a whole cake, especially not one of his favorite kinds. But as he raised the fork to his mouth Makena didn't move to stop him.

The cake was sweet and moist and delicious, practically melting in his mouth. It tasted like the home he'd never go back to, and like the new home he and his sister had made for themselves. In that moment, looking at the photo, tasting all of those memories, he couldn't keep the emotions down anymore, tears beginning to fall from his eyes.

"I'll go see who else got you something," Makena said quietly before leaving him alone, not poking fun at his tears for once.

So, sitting there in his hospital bed, dressed in the plain clothes he'd been given, shock collar buckled around his neck, barcode tag attached to his ear, hair still far too short for his liking, Xavier ate his cake and looked at his sister and he cried.

It’s not my most favorite trope, but it’s definitely a good one!

I think I really like when characters faint/go unconscious and are caught by others/slump into the other’s arms or are lifted up

I like characters being knocked unconscious/hitting their head etc but not really when it’s like. how do I say this? idk when it serves the plot; I like it more when it’s like villains/people who deserve it? getting tormented and stuff you know. i like the fuzziness in their head, blurring vision, all that good stuff

I think also like waking up after fainting and getting taken care of is a good one, stuff like that

I don’t really seek out fainting tropes, but when I do see them, it is a nice treat I think

42. Do you think that you have a future?

He laughs. "I've got nothin' but future, man. So I'd sure fuckin' hope so."

45. What is the worst injury you've received thus far?

He runs a hand through his hair. "I get asked this a lot, and I feel like it's different every time. There's just a lot that could be up there, you know? Being vivisected always sucks, and it's pretty up there as far as like, being something a normal person can't recover from. Uh, losing limbs or eyes or whatever isn't a great experience either. It's weird when shit's just, like, missing."

66. Do you think that you're going insane?

"I don't know why I would be." He shrugs. "Nothing's being evil at the moment, so I'm just chilling at my house with my roommate and blowing glass and carving wood and shit. Things are peaceful."

28. What is the worst case scenario to you, right now?

"I dunno, fucking dying?!" He opens his mouth to say more, but stops himself, swallowing. He pauses for a moment before starting again. "Actually...I guess the worst thing would be, um...giving in. And just...obeying, being her good little test subject. Not being me anymore. And staying like that forever. Never getting to go home." He screws his eyes shut, snarling slightly. "But that's not gonna fucking happen. I'll never stop fighting, and we're going to win this war and I'm going to fucking go home. And then I'll put all this shit behind me."

7. favorite animal? why?

Xavier's favorite animal is centipedes. He leaned really hard into "not like other girls" when he was little so he made himself like bugs because girls were supposed to be scared of bugs and he was different. Once he unpacked that shit he still really liked them because of all the things he'd learned about them, and a centipede was the first bug he ever held in his hand, so they're special to him. He likes watching them walk.

Makena likes elephants because they're smart and can hold grudges and she appreciates this about them.

24. do they have any creative hobbies? (art, writing, music, etc)

Xavier's good at photoshopping stupid bullshit for memes or whatever, but that's about it.

Makena likes to paint, but these days she mainly gets paint-by-numbers (the adult kind) because she never has the time to get really into a piece anymore. Maybe she'd have more time if she didn't game as much, but that's on her.
