⛳ THE PLAYERS 2026 — ROUND 1 REPORT | TPC SAWGRASS

Rory McIlroy's title defence has got off to a shaky start, but he's not out of it yet. The defending champion — who only arrived at TPC Sawgrass on Wednesday after a back injury forced him to withdraw from Bay Hill and skip all practice rounds — carded a two-over 74, leaving him seven strokes off the early pace.

McIlroy managed just one birdie in the round, battling discomfort on shots where the ball was below his feet or when chipping. But he was optimistic afterwards, saying he doesn't feel far away and a good second round could put him right back in contention.

At the top, it's a five-way logjam at five under par. Sepp Straka — who chipped in from off the 16th green — and Sahith Theegala — who holed out from 99 yards for an eagle at the 12th — share the early lead alongside Maverick McNealy, Lee Hodges and Austin Smotherman, who still has a 15-foot birdie putt to finish when play resumes Friday morning.

The big guns are lurking. Justin Thomas is one back, and a whole cluster including Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Åberg and Xander Schauffele are two off the pace. World No 1 Scottie Scheffler sits at level par after a scrappy 72.

With 29 players within four strokes of the lead, round two is set up beautifully.
