Not that anyone cares but I still feel like my greatest achievement was writing a parswoops fic and sending it to people that hadn’t read the comic that I’m friends with and having them go “Oh I’m going to read the comic now to know more about Kent & Jeff” and me having to go “So actually-” because Jeff is essentially a fandom creation and Kent is the quote on quote “villain” of the main story.
For the past six months or so, I’ve been working on one of my biggest projects by far. Since the third grade I have been writing stories with my own characters, later on venturing into the wild land of fan fiction. Writing has always been a part of me and who I strive to be. This will never change. Though in all of the years that have past, I have never completed a single work. I abandon them, scrap them, fall into a never ending spiral of telling myself I’m not good enough. Here is where that stops. With this project, currently titled The Pains of Growing, I plan to execute something I have never been able to before. Within the next year or two, I hope to finalize this story and move on to greater things. If you wish to join me throughout this journey and be the first to read the result, consider reading on.
Synopsis
The entirety of the story is not planned out, but I have a bit of an idea of where I want to go with it. Here’s a little blurb for those of you interested.
Niko has spent the past few years of his life wondering just who he is and what he wants in life. He has always been used as a pawn, tossed around in every direction and formed into someone he can no longer recognize. One with blood on his hands. One who is forced to see people as blurred faces of sin. One who cannot seem to find where and with whom he fits. Although, it may only take one person who feels the same way to fill the gaping hole within.
That’s pretty bad, but again, I don’t have a solid story line yet. I’ve also never been good at summaries. They’re my downfall!
Characters
Niko is the main character of this story. After the murder of both of his parents, he and his now presumably late sister had their childhoods snatched from them. Although kindhearted with good intentions, Niko falls victim to what he’s been taught. He is forced to see others as objects and money, the blurred lines between this and reality a difficult challenge for him to take on. Regardless of his circumstances, Niko pushes on day after day with the hope one day change will occur. The hope that one day he can get back the life he once lost.
Luka is the second main character. As Niko is, Luka will be introduced in the first chapter. Growing up in foster homes and being tossed away by a family once before, he struggles to keep himself above the water. Facing constant abuse from his adoptive family for the past few years, Luka is pushed forward by the idea of adulthood. He knows that once he turns eighteen he can legally dictate his own life, leaving behind his alcoholic father and naive mother. Though all his hopes seem to be taken away from him when Niko appears at his home one late September afternoon.
Jonathan is a secondary character, I plan for him to play a pivotal part in the story. As Niko’s closest and only true friend, Jonathan has gotten him through some of the toughest times of his life. Bold and outspoken with an entertaining sense of humor, Jonathan often feels Niko takes advantage of his presence and kindness. Tension between the two will occur early on and for good reason, but this character will not be tossed away.
Yes, there are more characters, I promise. I’m just avoiding mentioning them here because most of them appear around the climax of the story, therefore spoiling it heavily. More details on everyone will be shared at a later point as well. I’m still working out some bugs, per say, and trying to make the ‘cast’ diverse. There will be racial, cultural, sexual (orientation/gender) and hopefully, if I can write it in properly, religious diversity! =‘)
Content
The Pains of Growing will likely fall under a more mature rating. I don’t plan on doing anything too explicit. Even if I do, the sections will be cut and posted somewhere else if people wish to view it.
As for genre, I personally don’t like to categorize my work too much. Though, for the sake of those curious, the story is a combo of many genres. Being strictly fiction, it also has a good deal of romance, lots of crime elements, some good humor in my opinion, y’know, the works. I personally don’t like sticking to one genre, and write what makes me happy. I also try and fix the problems I have with things I’ve read, and dive into topics people don’t talk about much. When I start posting chapters and such, give it a try. With all that’s in it, you might just like it.
Anything Else?
As of now, I think that’s a pretty good intro to the story that is to come. At the rate I’m going it should be about sixteen chapters, about 4-8k words depending on the content. Yes, I know it’s long, but that’s how I’ve always written. Besides that, I think I’m done here.
