ft. marshmallow Adreis with marshmallows
At the bar, she had a general glance at the menu board. There was an overwhelming number of items on it, but she held in mind that she’d been ordered to 'be quick' , and ordered the hot cocoa, as well as a chicken pocket pastry.
“You want marshmallows in the cocoa, miss?” The server lifted the lid of a cylindrical tin filled with tiny white pillow-shaped confections. Adreis nodded, and the server scooped a small spoonful into her mug. He took back the used mug and pot, and placed them in a tub with other dirty dishes. He returned the strip of leather.
Adreis cupped the pastry like it was a precious thing. She took a cautious bite out of it, revealing a mixture of mashed potato, peas, minced chicken, and spices. Steam swirled out of it, tickling her cold nose and cheeks. When she glanced down into her mug, the marshmallows had puffed up and were already beginning to cling to each other.
As she enjoyed her little comforts, she watched Trace deliver his jars to various patrons. The brim of his hat sat low over his eyes, and Adreis wondered if he was simply shy. But he seemed to know the patrons on an amicable level; he mostly just nodded or shook hands with them, but they offered him generous smiles and a few coins.
When his hands and pockets were relieved of his wares, he came up to her at the bar.
“I’ve got more to deliver. D’you want to stay here?” he asked her.
She considered for a moment. She was curious to watch him work, have a tour of the city, but she hadn’t yet finished her meal.
She offered him his change and said, “You won’t eat?”
Though his head was turned down, she saw Trace shoot a glance to the side, a sort of half eye-roll. He pulled out the stool next to her, whipped back his coat, and sat.
