The Railways has developed a new system where by rail users can keep track of expected arrival and departure of trains at stations, as well as track in real time, the present position of a particular train.

The Information Technology arm of the Indian Railways is called as Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) and has brought to the fore, a fresh mobile application, which can be used for various enquiries about trains such as train timings.

The backend system of Railways namely the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) provides information to potential passengers regarding train schedules on a near real time basis via various interfaces like 139 ( the national unique rail enquiry number), website (www.trainenquiry.com), touch screens, mobile interfaces, display boards and enquiry counters at stations.

Earlier in September 2013, an interface of NTES website and a mobile version of the same was launched, which proved immensely useful for passengers thereafter. The train enquiry system has been enhanced by CRIS by the development of the mobile app and a Windows 8 platform based desktop application devoted to train enquiries and supported by Microsoft.

Amidst several new options in this mobile app is the ‘Spot Your Train’ feature, which provides information like expected time of arrival and departure at stations, as well as current location of trains.

There is also a ‘Train Schedule’ feature, which gives information about the complete schedule of a train, with all enroute stops and its proposed arrival/departure time, day count and distance.

Another feature is a query for ‘trains between stations,’ which provides a listing of all kinds of trains that operate between any two stations in the Indian Railways network.

This app on your mobile also features an option called as ‘cancelled trains,’ which provides information all cancelled trains. It indicates all trains that have been cancelled on the total route or those which have been cancelled in the partial route. All those who want to find about rescheduled or diverted trains, this app is useful for you.

The launch of this app has been done on Windows 8.0 phones and may be developed further for some other platforms. It is a huge relief that the mobile app provides information on current train running status.

Meanwhile, the All India Railway enquiry service 139 has expanded its operations and applications. This enquiry service, which initially provided an SMS based query on PNR (Passenger Name Record) number has now got added features.

This call-centre of the Railways setup two years ago today responds to a whole lot of queries of passengers. The India wide 139 number provides details of information about PNR status, seat availability, fare and arrival/ departure of trains at stations. These services are now available through SMS also.

For information on PNR, Write -- PNR (give space) (type PNR no.) and SMS to 139. Similarly, SMS Train (train number) Doj (date of journey) (ddmmyy) (station code) to 139 for train enquiry. SMS Train (train no.) Doj (ddmmyy) (Station from: STD code) (Station to: STD code) (class) (class type) to 139 for seat availability. For getting train fare, one can SMS Fare (train number) Doj (ddmmyy) (station from: STD code) (station to: STD code) (class) to 139.

139 is however not a toll free service. SMS charges are applicable.
