Katharine Hepburn revived her career after a period of being perceived as "box office poison" with her fashionable turn as Tracy Lord, the elder daughter of a wealthy Philadelphia Main Line socialite family. Her wardrobe evolves throughout the film, mirroring her emotional journey. Her initial preference for pants, seen in the opening scenes, depicts her independent and somewhat defiant nature, while the gowns she wears later, especially the wedding gown, highlight her vulnerability and eventual acceptance of her feelings.
