Women’s Issues: Workplace Inequality by Tracy Yu

In 1963, a woman was paid 59 cents for every dollar that a man earned. The Equal Pay Act was passed as an effort to reduce that wage gap by making it an illegal act to pay men and women unequal wages for doing the same job. The act has gradually reduced the gap over time, but not nearly enough. The wage gap persists in the workforce with white women earning 20% less than men in 2015– and women of color making even less. The Importance of Standing Up and Speaking Out: African American Activists Who Have Changed Society by Tracy Yu

All throughout history, there have been many examples of activists who have spoken out against social injustices and fought for their rights. Inspired by Black History Month, here is a list of admirable African American activists who stood up, spoke out, and invoked social change.

Martin Luther King Jr. is perhaps the best-known example of an African American rights activist. During a strike in Memphis, Tennessee, where black sanitation workers were protesting the terrible working conditions and low pay- obvious discriminations against African Americans- King gave a speech in support of the workers’ second march. The protest became recognized on a national level and eventually, the city of Memphis agreed to the workers’ demands. Michelle Obama’s Influence on Global Girls’ Education by Tracy Yu

Just recently in March of 2015, Michelle launched the Let Girls Learn campaign to help girls around the world have access to education. She is calling on countries all around the globe to help educate and empower the young women in their countries. Over 62 million girls around the world do not have access to quality education, so it is extremely important to join forces to help these girls attain the education they deserve. Not only is education important in and of itself, countries with more young women in high school have lower maternal mortality rates, lower infant mortality rates, lower rates of HIV and AIDS, and better child nutrition.
