I find it so frustrating that there are no larger cages suited for hamsters on the market. You know? It's always just small plastic ones or the over the top ones with tubes :(
Hey, I totally get what you mean!
I think one thing that’s important to point out is that it really depends on where you live. This is a comparison of what you get when you search for “Hamster cage large” on Amazon.com and Amazon.de. Naturally there are still many shitty cages on the german site, but it is obvious that the offers in Germany aren’t only cheaper, but also more suitable in size and material, too. It’s clear how the definition of ‘large’ varies on both sites. There are also many websites that sell only big, nice cages. They’re expensive but totally worth it, for example on this site you can frame the cage just as you want, from the height of the bedding to the size and place where you want the ventilation openings (and if there should be a cat protection on them). It seems like the variety of big, nice cages is bigger in some countries in europe than in the US and UK.
Maybe I am wrong but from what I’ve seen when I searched the internet for all kinds of information, it also seems like many countries lack well-made informative websites about rodents. When typing in “Hamsters all you need to know” this site is the first one that comes up. They don’t even mention wooden cages! And the picture of the cage gives me chills - it’s not suitable at all. They don’t suggest any size for the cages, which is quite bad and not very informative. And nooo please don’t put a fan in front of the cage if it’s hot - No matter how far it is away. Mineral licks can even be dangerous because hamsters can’t handle high amounts of minerals. They even suggest to feed your hamster cherries and peaches - all kinds of stone fruits are NOT good for hamsters! And nooooo mangoes aren’t good either. Then there’s this ‘informative’ sheet about hamsters from the animals rights coalition. They make some good points but no, hamster balls are not good for your hamsters exercise. The issue about bowl / bottle was already discussed on this site and they don’t even bother to mention the drawbacks of bottles. And apples shouldn’t be fed daily - They’re not even vegetables! And NO, toasts are not great treats! And YES, small amounts of iceberg lettuce are perfectly okay - They don’t even give an explanation why they shouldn’t be fed. Tubes aren’t as important as a sand bath and I don’t even want to start about the hamster wheel in the picture. There are some more issues but I am already stressed about all the misinformation I pointed out.
Sorry this turned out into a little rant about the internet, my point is that there are tons of misinformation about hamsters - But in some countries it is much easier to inform yourself than in others. There aren’t laws about how big a hamster cage should be, but in germany you seldom find a hamster forum where anything under 1 qm is recommended. Here’s a nice post about comparisons of sizes. I know it says german style is 100x40 cm but almost all german forums stick to the theFeldhamster version. It’s sad, but concerns want to sell their small plastic cages and don’t care about the animals. They’re cheaper and easier produced than big ones and as long as people buy them, they’ll be sold. The awful concerns that sell tiny plastic cages shouldn’t be supported in any way and it would be fantastic if unsuitable equipment was banned from the market but I don’t think that will happen soon. All we can do is hope for the best and keep informing handlers about what’s good for the animal and what’s not. Sorry again for digressing :,) But in short, yes it’s incredibly frustrating and I am happy about everyone who bothers to search for nice big cages or decides to build a cage on their own.

1. My old pony almost made me quit riding. 2. For five years I worked at a site with 80 horses. During the summer we’d move up to a remote location, where I and one other staff was responsible for 30 of them. We had week long programs for youth between 13-17 years of age, and focused on teaching horsemanship. 3. I have barrel raced in english tack (and won!) 4. I have never competed seriously, but have taken numerous green horses to their first shows. 5. I have one horse: a six year old, flashy sorrel rabicano gelding named Warden. He is still a work in progress. 6. A spoiled horse is my least favorite kind of horse to work with.

I'm terrified of sharks. I can't watch "Jaws". The time I did watch it I wouldn't be able to sleep thinking there was a shark "swimming" around my bed. I'm also fear getting stabbed or shot.
Uhm yeah i can't help but think im going to be eaten if i swim in the ocean. I think those are all rational fears!
