People be like "I wish dragons were real, I'd love to have a pet dragon, I wanna be a dragon rider" but then call horses demonic and chaotic and evil, like, mate, if you can't handle a horse you prolly couldn't handle a dragon. A dragon is just a scaly carnivorous horse.

On the northwest Belgian coast, there is a little known tradition: shrimp fishing on horseback. The activity consists of what its name describes: fishing shrimp on a horse. In the 15th century, shrimp fishing on horseback was still practised on the North Sea coasts in France, the Netherlands and even the South of England. This activity represented an extra revenue needed for the household. Nowadays there is only one place in which it is still ongoing: Oostduinkerke, a sub-municipality of the municipality of Koksijde.

Ran across a very interesting thread by veterinarians about how no amount of joint supplements, adequan, legend, of joint injections can keep your horse sounder than proper hoof care, proper turnout, and not jumping the living crap out of them and that’s a m o o d.

It seems like the year of leg injuries for me.
Had a horse either cast herself really bad or get bit by something in the desert. Leg swelled bigger than a tree, blood test showed no infection. Vet wasn’t sure what exactly to do, but eventually we got it down a bit, had her sound for light work. She left my barn sound with a kinda fat leg. Unfortunately her owner ended up ruining her this summer.
One of my boss ladies geldings bowed a tendon. We got it split, thankfully he has a great prognosis and will likely be back to work this winter.
Over the summer a horse that was in the neighboring paddock to my boss ladies broke her leg and I was the one to notice. I stayed with her groom for the whole process of putting her to sleep.
Had a client brake a splint bone on their old gelding when they turned out with some new horses they bought. He went in for an operation, and I’m pretty sure he’s fine now. Will for sure be fine for next season.
Then just today the 22 horses at my house went through an electric fence, ran back though it, decided to hit the other hot wire and some how one went through. She must have slipped across the iced over driveway, jammed her leg, broke it, fell, got up, put a bone through the skin and then just stood. Of course we’re out in the boonies and it took 40 mins for the vet to get here. Took the same for a friend with a gun, so we waited for the vet. Poor mare... only 3 years old... super sweet. Poor girl, she was so good about waiting for the vet. Just tucking her head into whoever was holding her at the time.
I’ve never seen a horse pass that quietly. No fight, just dropped, her eyes fluttered and that was it. She knew what was happening, she was ready for it.
Weirdly enough it’s also the 10th anniversary of my first horses death today.... November 24 2009...
