i dont think yka was as popular as sarazanmai? a lot of people seemed to drop it pretty quickly because they assumed it was fetishizing. but in general there always seems to be people who dont understand that ikuharas works deal with heavy content
Yeah Sarazanmai’s a lot more popular than YKA was. I feel like YKA’s first episodes were somewhat difficult to get a hang of, whereas Sarazanmai’s got recommended a lot for being so absurd and fun. I know my friend dropped YKA for being so “artsy”, but like I said, I didn’t follow what was going on in the anime community back then, I only checked the tumblr tag and that never gave me the full picture of how people perceived it.
I’ve come across so many people who seem to look down on and criticize all the heavy content in Ikuhara’s works. I honestly don’t know why they force themselves to watch them when they only complain about them. This has actually bothered me for years.

God I wish that were me lol. I remember there being a shit ton of discourse and a lot of people being REALLY nasty towards YKA fans (some were even insulting Ikuhara himself). Shit fucking sucked but most of those people seemed moved on after the first few episodes and the rest moved on soon after the show ended so it's a lot more peaceful now
Haha :P I only remember some discourse about Ikuhara fetishizing lesbians, which I suppose was somewhat relevant, but kinda annoying. I never saw/don’t remember seeing anyone be nasty towards other fans, that’s horrible! The YKA fandom seems pretty dead these days, but at least the only criticism I come across nowadays is constructive and not just people yelling at others over how problematic it is/was.

oh god it was bad....I remember the discourse not just being about the "incest" but mainly about ship wars and idk whats worse
Oh nooo I can’t even imagine! I keep forgetting about the incest in Penguindrum, it’s dealt with so differently compared to most incest anime storylines. I also don’t get the shipwars at all. I don’t really ship anyone, while I also ship everyone together. Kinda like with Sarazanmai now. It can be fun to think about the ships, but they’re not at all what draws me into the story or what I’m primarily thinking about when I’m watching it.
When I wrote that post I was thinking about different things all together, but I guess fandom discourse will always be about shipping first and foremost.
