ADDING ON TO THE HAIR BRAIDING CONCEPT: y/n absolutely knows that sokka’s styling her hair into courtship braids, but doesn’t say anything

I’d like to think she is blissfully unaware.

That is until she visits the Southern Water Tribe for the first time.

Tbh it’s a While before she goes down there, probably a few years into them dating, when Sokka has gotten tired of traveling to and from the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation with Aang and Katara visiting their friends and goes back to see his tribe and his dad(s). Y/N tags along for the—however long he’s there.

Y/N already knows that a lot of the men in the SWT wear braids in their hair, she met a lot of the warriors during the war obviously, but she’s never met any of the women. At first she doesn’t realize it, that only women of her age are wearing braids like hers. And no one really see’s hers either, she still wears her hair in the half up-half down style of the fire nation and her braids are tucked away most of the time instead of hanging out like hakoda’s.

But she takes it down one day, just to immediately but it back up and make it neater, but Kanna still sees it, maybe says something like, “I used to have braids like that once. When I was in the NWT being courted by Pakku.”

Y/N’s just like tying her hair up like, “Yeah that’s cool. Wait.” And just freezes. Because Sokka braided her hair, and Sokka would know what they meant. But then Y/N just smiles to herself, she’s been keeping her own little secrets about hair anyways. besides, isn’t that what they’re doing anyways? courting one another?

And yeah, she probably never tells Sokka that she found out because it doesn’t matter to her, and at this point she’s been wearing them for years, and she probably doesn’t want to embarrass him by finally calling him out. plus maybe she likes it idk...

I have a head canon. Going off hair is a big thing in Fire Nation. And braids/hair styles for Water Tribe. Y/N letting Katara wash her hair and both not realizing how affectionate to each other’s cultures. As if they were sisters already. Then Sokka braiding Y/N hair or combing/playing with it often. Sokka putting courtship braids in her hair or beads and not telling her what they mean. But gazing dreamily at her as she wears them.

absolutely yes to everything you said. I kind of alluded to this when I wrote the scene where Y/N gets her hair cut by Katara. Obviously we know hair means a lot in the Fire Nation culture and having someone from a different culture like, cut her hair off (which also i super meaningful) really showed how her relationship with Katara had grown!!

But anon, you took it to a whole new level🥰 i think the best part about it is, they’re not doing it because they KNOW it’s meaningful, they’re doing it because they love one another and are just being sweet. Like Katara thinks that washing/braiding/brushing Y/N’s hair is a cute&fun bonding experience whereas Y/N is like “of course i’d let her do this, she’s family, she’s always been family” But then! when Katara asks Y/N to return the favor by plaiting little braids near her hair line to hold back the baby hairs so they don’t get in her way whilst she’s training like y/n does, she’s like “oh, yeah?”

and dont even get me started on sokka, sokka who looks at y/n like she hangs the stars in the night sky, OF COURSE he’d try and be slick and put courtship braids in her hair. and of course he’s pretty good at braiding hair, (i mean who do you think did katara’s hair until she could do it herself??) and so yeah she’s not afraid he’s going to tangle it or anything bad but y/n’s flattered flustered that sokka’s touching her hair and he’s all nervous that she’s gonna figure out what he’s doing but they’re both clueless to one another. just, AGH i love them so much

Head cannon. Can be before comet or post war. Y/N meeting this misogynist dude bro who flirts with her. When she turns him down or beats him he goes on how a real man wouldn’t want to date someone as strong and rough as her even if she’s flamin’ (lol fire nation slang). Que to sokka in the background hyping her up like he did the Boulder. Screaming for her to destroy the competition. Y/N wins and gives sokka the metal cause it matches his bag. GAang has no time for gender norms. Lol im just in love with the idea of cheerleader Sokka. He’s like ultimate hype man.

- so three brothers, Ren (21), Haruki (18), and the unnamed little brothers from chapter two (5 or so).

and bc yes i'm this obsessive over my fic, i've created short descriptions of them as well:

- Ren is in the Fire Nation Army (per my Zuko drabble/prequel) and probably has been away from home since he was 18

- i think that he and Y/N probably frequently wrote letters to one another but haven't seen each other since he left home

- i hc that Y/N was closest with Ren, they just get on really well because he's very respectful of her as a person and treats her like the capable person that she is

- he's protective of her as well and i believe he was the only person to stand up for her when it came to her dad being mean

Ren is BIG, super tall, super built, would be absolutely terrifying if he was running at you even without firebending. He's a proficient firebender, relies on big moves/explosions, also know's how to use a sword, but not as well as Y/N

he's got a quiet and calm demeanor, but a big personality. very opposite to his outward appearance, and big himbo energy. He's really funny and you just can't not like him when you meet him.

definitely joined the Fire Nation army because he didn't know what else he could do in life, because he'd been raised like an American boy in public school, pipelined to the army.

someone one time, a long time ago, said that he dated one of Ty Lee's older sisters, and they break up but they get back together and he definitely marries her (ty lee loves the idea of being "sisters" with y/n)

- Haruki joined the Yuyan archers. He's a middle child and I hc him to be... very aggressive? with Y/N. he feels like he's constantly competing with her and Ren and he hates that they get along so well. he thinks that that is them ganging up on him or something

Haruki is like, a long, lithe, quiet looking dude. But he has the WORST temper out of the bunch. when he and Y/N are around each other–especially when they're younger–they WILL fight. I'm talking screaming matches that dissolve into physical beatdowns unless someone stops them. is this how Y/N learns to be a scrappy fighter? maybe ;)

like Y/N, he is ALSO on his dad's shit list because he joined the Yuyan archers instead of the Fire Nation army. He thought that by joining the Yuyan archers he'd be the favored son for once because they're an elite, special operations force of the Fire Nation but it did the complete opposite. basically, middle child? can't win. (also, i hc that the Yuyan archers are made up of nonbenders - or maybe that's canon i don't remember and so their dad thinks that is disgraceful for him to be one)

definitely is a great firebender, more precise than Ren but enjoyed learning archery, and that was definitely a factor in joining the Yuyan archers, while also trying to impress his dad

when he and Y/N get older though, i'm talking post war and after, he and Y/N have a better relationship because they now refuse to let their dad's influence fuel their petty rivalry. they still argue sometimes, but that's because they're both hot-heads

also lmao, idk why but he's definitely gay

- the unnamed little brother: i don't have much on him, tbh (i mean lmao he doesn't even have a name), mostly because Y/N didn't live with him for long and they only saw each other on important dates and holidays.

- like to think that he kind of has this obsession with Y/N though, like he hears stories about her from his mom and just finds her to be this mythical creature almost because "my sister is important enough to live at the palace?!!" and when she comes home from being with the gaang, he's like jumping in her arms (which probably freaks Y/N out a lot) and is all in her business trying to figure out where she was and what she did and overall is a really annoying little 5-year-old but honestly she finds it really endearing

- i also hc that he hangs out with her a lot more when she gets back and they become really close too, she's very over protective of him and when he's little she will give him piggyback rides all over the palace and take him to all the sweet shops in the city and buy him anything he wants

- he's like the sweetest little kid you'll ever meet because I fully believe that their dad wasn't around enough to corrupt him. plus their mom is more protective of him than she was of the others because he's the baby. so i don't think she would have let Y/N's dad be mean to him.

- edited to add: after the war, the three oldest siblings (and eventually Unnamed Brother joins them) establish an annual trip to their house on Ember Island, where they basically relive the best parts of their childhoods. They swim in the ocean and in hidden lagoons on the island in the morning before it gets too hot. they skimboard and do whatever the equivalent to surfing the atla universe has. they cut fruit for each other and gorge on it during the day as they doze on the porch. they train at dusk, playing the silly games they learned when they were really young (that taught them things like how to hone their firebending and sword training). every night for the week they’re there, they have a bonfire out on the beach where they sit around it and talk about their lives, they talk about stupid things they did as kids and they talk about their growing families and the frustrations of their jobs. they go to old spots they used to sneak away to when they were kids, places that haven’t been seen by a human in 12+ years. they play in tide pools and catch badgerfrogs and fireflies when it gets dark. basically they live their best years over again and again with no Father or Mother to reprimand them for wasting time or tracking mud in the house.

- of course during these week long trips, the gaang is always invited, and almost always they join for a few days or the whole week. and it’s fun for everyone, but all of them can tell that this is really for Y/N and her brothers. Unnamed Brother joins in the fun, but he can’t understand the lives the other three lived in the Before. He was born basically as they all left the nest and his life was vastly different. It’s really about them having the childhoods they missed out on for so many years.

i’m in love with the concept of the different nations in ATLA having their own separate languages and it doesn’t get talked about nearly enough...

-sokka and katara talking to themselves about aang when they first get him out of the iceberg when they think he’s asleep??? both of them forgetting that aang doesn’t speak their mother tongue and having to backtrack in the middle of sentences and start over and teaching him words and phrases of the water tribe language!!

- toph feeling left out for so long because she can only talk to the other members of the gaang in a common language that every knows until suki comes along!! kyoshi islanders talk in a mix of earth kingdom and water tribe words but it’s so nice to hear a language she’s used to hearing roll off suki’s tongue

- aang feeling even MORE left out because he’s the only person in the world who knows the air nomad language?? he teaches everyone words and phrases because he’s so afraid of it dying with him??

- accents!!! everyone sounds a little bit different when they speak the common language together!!

- all of them are multilingual by the end of their travels!!

- and of course i have to tie this back to traitor but:

like imagine y/n and zuko talking quietly to one another when they are having their soft conversation from the last chapter. they’re using a language exclusive to the fire nation—maybe even a more formal version used by the aristocracy. it would make their apologies and their swapping of stories that much more sweet and intimate because they’re talking in their mother tongue and they only did that as kids

unnamed younger brother is so young when the war ends and the gaang comes into his life that he feels like they were always there, and of course that included sokka. so he sees sokka like one of his older siblings!

sokka is so good with kids too!! he helped take care of all of those kids in his tribe; he wasn’t just training them to be warriors, he was also babysitting them to keep them out of their moms hair!!

y/n learns how to be an older sibling as she goes. the FN sibs all have super weird, competitive relationships (see: Zuko&Azula, Iroh&Ozai, Ty Lee&sisters). Everything is about individuality and how YOU are better than everyone else. Y/N grew up the same way with her two older brothers and she vows to herself that her and unnamed younger brother will just be siblings. there’s nothing to compete over, no one to impress. it’s by far y/n’s easiest relationship she’s ever had

no context traitor hcs: when y/n and sokka have kids, Sokka is a girl dad, but y/n is a boy mom so she just really doesn’t know what to do with her two daughters because she was raised by a boy dad. That’s why she vibes so well with Bumi II and later Tenzin as well.

i’ve had a few anons send asks and headcanon y/n as being a good artist and i had some thoughts so i want to expand on this a bit!!

after the war, y/n notices that zuko avoids the hall where portraits of previous firelords are. he’ll even go the long way around the palace to get to a meeting.

y/n sees this and it makes her really sad. this is his home and the last thing he needs is to feel haunted by his shitty ancestors. so she does something about it. she gets rid of all the paintings of ozai and azulon and sozin, p much all the bad guys, and works on her own painting of zuko. 

she spends weeks and weeks on the portrait. she holes herself in her room so much that zuko actually thinks she’s mad at him for something. she uses messy sketches as models and she does them on the sly whenever she gets the chance–dinner, meetings, or when they’re just hanging out.

when it’s done, she has it hung in the hall and she’s never been more proud of anything in her whole life. she devises a plan with kiyi to get zuko to go in the hall by playing a game of tag. 

kiyi runs into the hall and zuko chases her and he catches sight of something different. 

and it’s him. well, an oil portrait of him, hanging on the wall where his father’s used to be. it’s regal looking; for the first time ever he can see himself as fire lord. he doesn’t know what to say, but he knows it was y/n because of the smile she’s wearing just watching him stare up at himself. 

he’s not one for vanity, he didn’t care one way or another if he ever got a portrait but he doesn’t get a chill down his spine when he walks down that hall anymore.
