Doug McClure

Douglas Osborne McClure (born in Glendale, California on May 11, 1935) was an American actor who, while attending UCLA, did some modelling and commercials before getting a couple of minor acting roles in several films. He first garnered attention as one of the leads in the CBS crime series Checkmate (1960-1962). After that show ended, he signed with Revue Studios and landed his most memorable role, that of Trampas, the cowhand in the NBC western series The Virginian (1962-1971) which ran for nine seasons. Revue was absorbed by Universal Pictures in 1964, making McClure a Universal contract player. He continued to act in a number of theatrically released and made-for-TV movies and headlined several television shows. He continued to work until his death - he was even filming an episode of the CBS crime drama One West Waikiki (1995), which was released while he was hospitalized.

On February 5, 1995, he passed away at age 59 from lung cancer in Sherman Oaks, California after collapsing on set. His long career served as one of the inspirations for the name and certain character aspects of Troy McClure on The Simpsons.
