Russell was reading the Schwartz edited Tower Comics in 1966 -- Fantastic Four did not take him entirely off course. Citing "my god" as anything to get excited on feels like a reflection on just how stringent mainstream comics were. Regarding Jughead's sexuality -- Russell was taking positive representation where he could find them.

The Carol Kalish article is "Why Women Read Archie", seemingly the second leg in a trilogy after part 1 -- I think it's "Why Women Don't Read Comics"? Debate amongst yourselves if she put any theory to good practice while at Marvel.

Maybe you want the 21 year old male Archie reader's response (favorite comic -- Betty and Veronica, second favorite-- X-Men) or the response from ... name surfaces at Comics Journal... Dwight Decker ( "she seemed to explain the concept of Archie as though most of the readers would be unfamiliar with anything but superheroes." ) and response which amounts to "no" though I would suggest -- maybe it only seems that way.
