"Is there a spell to make me into a boy?"
(Trans! Draco HC fic thing, in an honourable fuck-you to JKR. Also there's gonna be a trans! Ginny one coming up soon too)
(I did actually mean to post this last night but fell asleep)
So when Neptunia Malfoy was young, she showed her veela powers early, and often glamoured herself without using a wand or a spoken spell
When she was put into a dress by Narcissa, Neptunia would glamour it to look like a top and trousers
When her hair got long, Narcissa would style it up but Neptunia would pull it back down, so that it was the same was as her father's
By the time she's 6, she tries to be her father's double - long cloaks, high collars, and hair down
The few times Narcissa tried to get her to wear a gown or a skirt or kitten heels, Neptunia made the manor windows explode - after that it was the chandelier which shattered - when Neptunia made one of the family portraits burn and dissolve, Narcissa took the hint
At 7, Lucious decided to teach her actual transfiguration magic, since her glamours were getting stronger and stronger, so he figured she'd pick it up easily
She picked it up completely naturally, and by the end of the day was turning a cushion into a snake ornament and then into a glass which would shout when it got filled up with water
The next day, she had transfigured all of the skirts and dresses Narcissa insisted on keeping in her wardrobe into trousers and suits and shirts
Her parents take the hint and buy her actual suits and trousers and shirts
At 10, she and Narcissa are sitting practicing honing Neptunia's glamours and learning little tricks for glamouring a specific area (a scratch, a bruise etc) when Neptunia says "Is there a spell to make me into a boy?"
Narcissa pauses and then asks if her daughter means as a fun trick, but Neptunia shakes her head - "not for a trick. Forever. I want to look like a boy, not a girl."
Narcissa knows if she doesn't give her daughter something useful then Neptunia will go away and try to come up with her own spells, which could hurt her, so Narcissa teaches her a basic enchantment - the effects are about as accurate as polyjuice potion, so it always wears off within a few hours
She enchants herself constantly, and soon enough it's normal for Lucious and Narcissa to see a little boy in their manor, with short blonde hair slicked back, and delicate features which are beautiful but still distinctly masculine
One day Lucious calls for Neptunia to come in the next room, and the boy comes in
Lucious talks about how they'll be going supply shopping soon since it's almost Neptunia's 11th birthday and so it's only a few months until she starts Hogwarts
Lucious asks what sort of witch his daughter wants to become
The boy tilts his head, and steadies himself before saying "I want to be a wizard, not a witch. I want to grow up as a boy. At home and at Hogwarts."
At this point his parents aren't surprised
They don't understand, but they recognise this is important
So Lucious kneels down to his son's eye level and asks softly "What do you want your name to be?"
The boy answers instantly- "Draco."
Lucious and Narcissa both kiss his cheeks - "Draco it is then. Our little dragon."
Their son beams up at them and he's completely beautiful -
The enchantment doesn't hide the fact he is a veela, since that's in his blood
Male veela are rare, so when Narcissa and Lucious are out with their son in wizarding London shopping for school supplies, they get congratulated and spoken to, since it's so rare for a male veela to be born and for his magic to be so strong already at such a young age
His parents never out him
His father teaches him more spells and potions for shape-shifting, and eventually they find a mix that works and which Draco can do easily
By the time he's starting Hogwarts, Draco keeps his form even in his sleep, and his parents aren't worried about him accidently outing himself
So when he sees Harry for the first time, he tries to impress him the only way he's seen his father impress people: he brags and talks down to those he's been taught are below him and offers Potter status
Harry of course tells him to get fucked, and Draco is just left confused - that always worked for his father, so why doesn't it work for him? Did Harry Sodding Potter somehow see through the layers of magic? Did he think Draco was a fraud?
He panics for the rest of the night, but covers it up as sulking
But once he's in his room with Blaise, he breaks down
Blaise and Draco have known each other since they were 8, so Blaise already knows Draco's trans
Draco's lying curled up in his bed with the curtains drawn, hyperventilating and muttering stuff like "How did he know he couldn't know no one can tell", when Blaise moves the curtain out the way and sits on the bed next to his friend -
"Potter didn't tell you to sod off because he saw through the enchantments, he told you to sod off because you insulted his friend"
That calms Draco down a bit and they end up falling asleep curled up around each other
The rest of first year consists of Draco trying to find a way to talk to Harry again and coming up blank
Across the summer, he and his father do more spells and enchantments and potions, and by the start of second year Draco's voice is dropping and breaking just like it should
But he has to take his potion every few hours, to keep the changes consistent
And he's always paranoid that somehow someone will know
When he's upset, his veela powers take over, so he starts second year with people staring and gauping at him anywhere he goes, people falling over themselves and walking into things because they were too busy looking at him instead
It would be funny and flattering if it wasn't making him constantly on the edge of a panic attack
Even the teachers get a little side tracked if they look at him for too long during lessons
Blaise is mostly immune though since they've known each other for so long and Narcissa taught Blaise how to block Draco's veela charms
But even then, Blaise still gets flustered sometimes if it's a particularly stressful point for Draco
Which always seems to be when Harry's around
Blaise puts it together pretty fast after noticing that pattern
So when Harry starts following Draco around for the majority of the school year, Draco convinces himself it's just because Potter never learned about veela before so doesn't know any better
Cause surely that's why - there's no way Potter could be suspicious about him - Blaise assured him there was no way for anyone to see past the enchantments and the potion
He's almost relieved when he finds out it's cause of the giant snake under the toilets and that Harry had assumed snake = slytherin = Draco
Third year passes almost uneventfully, since Potter doesn't follow him around so Draco doesn't stress as much, though he's still drinking the potions he and his father made up, and he's always worried someone will find out but at the same time, he's more comfortable with it than he was the year before
In the summer between third and fourth year, he comes out as gay to his parents and says he and Blaise have started dating
Fourth year is hell though cause all the new students there for the competition means more chances of someone catching him or of one of them knowing a spell to break powerful enchantments, or some other disaster
It doesn't help that everyone is fucking gorgeous and their accents and Blaise just grins at him cause he knows how much self control it's taking Draco not to let his veela side take over
That is until Harry gets put into the competition, anyway
Blaise spends the rest of the school year with trails of people following his boyfriend around and staring at them both constantly
The only slight reprieve is that one of the French girls is veela too, so some people seem more interested in her which gives Draco a short break every once in a while
Blaise knows Draco has had a crush on Harry for years but knows better than to point it out or bring it up
The summer between fourth and fifth year is spent with Draco holed up in his room just enjoying the peace and quiet and refusing to move for anyone or anything
In fifth year things are somehow worse, with everyone going on about Voldemort being back- he knows if that's true then his parents will be forced to return to being death eaters and he knows he'll be expected to join too
At the end of fifth year, he's a nervous wreck
Over that summer, his parents try to teach him stronger spells because Voldemort wants him - a male veela that powerful from such a pure bloodline is better than gold to the fucker
But Narcissa and Lucious know that Voldemort will be able to sense the layers of enchantments Draco uses to alter his appearance and will forcibly break them down in a show of proving Draco's loyalty
When the time comes, Draco gets a cruciatus curse which stays on him for hours until all his enchantments have worn off and his mind is too beaten and empty to keep them up anymore
It's the first time he screams until he loses his voice
And it's the first time in years that he or his parents have seen him in his female form
Voldemort thinks it's hysterical - after beating Draco bloody and forcing the dark mark onto his arm, he lets Narcissa take her son away and clean him up
He stays locked in his room for the rest of that summer, taking the potions his parents sneak him so that his voice will continue to drop
He slowly builds the enchantments back up, building and mixing their strengths and weaving them around himself, day in and day out until he's back to his real form and it's back to holding without him having to focus on it too much
He's almost relieved to be back at Hogwarts and only having to be paranoid about Potter
But of course the trauma from the summer and the stress and pressure of knowing he has to kill Dumbledor means his veela powers go into overdrive
Blaise spends most of the year as a body guard to keep people at arms length since he knows Draco isn't intentionally turning the attraction level up to 11/10
When they have the fight in the bathroom and Harry casts septum sempra on him, Draco's enchantments fade
Harry ran out before he noticed the fact Malfoy's shirt was getting tighter across his chest, didn't notice Malfoy's features getting softer - all he saw was blood
When Snape ran in, he saw Draco lying in his blood but he could see the enchantments fading and wearing off, just as he had seen them begin to shatter and weaken under the cruciatus curse before Draco got his dark mark
After the fight, Draco fades in and out of consciousness- he knows his uncle heals him, but he doesn't know that his uncle strengthens all of his enchantments while he's blacked out
Later that night, Draco curls up in bed with Blaise and cries until he can't breathe and almost pukes
That's when he finally tells Blaise everything -
About his crush on Harry, about Voldemort, about the mark that he's kept glamoured this whole time, about the vanishing cabinet, about what happened when he got his mark, about his order to kill Dumbledor or Voldemort will torture and kill his family
Blaise listens and doesn't interrupt, just let's his boyfriend get it all out
After an hour or so, Draco shifts and moves his left arm up between them
They're both shirtless on the bed, since Draco enjoys being able to take his shirt off without redoing an enchantment - he'd gotten good at the transforming spell which actually made his chest flat, rather than just masking it to make it look flat like his old enchantments did
After taking a few deep breaths, he focuses on his left forearm and Blaise watches as the smooth skin transforms to a dark smudge which then forms into the dark mark
Up until then, Draco had never intentionally undone a glamour in front of him and Blaise had never asked him to
But he understands why Draco is showing him now
Blaise spends the rest of the night covering Draco in soft kisses, beige extra gentle on the dark mark and the seven scars which were now engraved on his chest from the bathroom fight
When it comes to Draco confronting Dumbledor in the observatory, he knows he can't do it
Even with Bellatrix laughing and licking at his ear and saying "go on then Malfoy- kill him. Be a man and kill him"
When Draco starts lowering his wand, Snape kills Dumbledor and Draco hates himself
Partly for the entire situation
But mostly unexpected dysphoria
He follows after the death eaters while having a panic attack
Hours later, Snape holds his nephew while he cries and pukes
Meanwhile Blaise is curled up in his bed alone for the first time, hoping and praying that it was Snape who had killed Dumbledor and not Draco
But he knows his boyfriend isn't coming back
That summer and what would have been his seventh year are spent hiding in his room, and being a beating bag for the death eaters - his parents let it happen, since the alternative is watching their son lose his enchantments under hours of a crucio
When Luna and Olivander are held prisoners, Draco spends a lot of time in the dungeons with them, keeping them company
One night, he and luna are sitting up and he comes out to her
She's the only person other than his parents and Blaise that he's came out to - he isn't even sure why he tells her, really
She thanks him for trusting her with his secret and promises not to tell anyone whenever they get out of there - the subject changes and they never bring it up again
When Harry, Ron and Hermoine are captured, Draco knows he's fucked either way - give Potter over knowing he'll be killed, or lie and be beaten
He knows it is - he's been staring at those eyes for years
"I can't be sure" - he knows he's signing himself up for more beatings but he can't just hand Potter over
When the trio escape with luna, Olivander, Dobby and Bellatrix's knife, Draco knows -
The rest of that night is spent with him screaming until he loses his voice, and then when his father tries to intervene Voldemort gives him the option of them continuing with the torture curses or Lucious could simply break all of the enchantments and reveal Draco's birth form
Lucious knows that would be worse than any torture curse for his son, so he refuses
Voldemort then tells him to crucio his son, or go through the same curses himself
At some point in the early morning, Narcissa is allowed to take her son up to his room and patch him up
The enchantments wore off, but the transforming spells and potions didn't, so Draco still mostly looks like himself
His mother gives him her wand after she's healed him as best she can
Later, when the death eaters invade Hogwarts at the start of the battle, Draco goes straight for Blaise
They're both crying and Draco apologises over and over but Blaise just keeps kissing his hair and pulling him closer
When they're all in the courtyard and Harry is lying in Hagrid's arms, and his father calls for Draco to cross sides and join them, he steps closer to Blaise
It's only when Harry rolls onto the ground and jumps back to life that Draco moves -
He runs across the court and throws Potter his wand
After, he finds Blaise outside the hall, starting to attempt to help clean up
Harry comes over and Blaise steps out the way, letting him see Draco
Draco knows he's not just getting thanked for throwing Harry a wand - he knows it's for the manor too
Harry starts to walk away but stops and holds his hand out - "Can we start again?"
That summer, he stays with Blaise
In their eighth year, he and Harry get put in a room together
Slowly, they start to learn more about each other
He also becomes good friends with luna, who actually convinces him to come out to Harry - "he won't mind, you know. He might not quite understand, but he won't mind."
When Draco does come out, they stay up the whole night talking
Harry kisses him for the first time and asks him out a week later
