i had a whole big thing i was going to write up about transness and visibility and certain messily conflicted feelings of my own but the thing is i am Tired so instead i'm just going to say:

hi! i'm brin, and i've been Doing The Trans Thing for a while now (first came out in 2007, baybeeeeeeeeeeee). i write things, mainly music, sometimes words, and also Jewish liturgy

you can find my playful, dreamy clarinet sonata over on BandCamp, and i'm putting on a livestreamed reading of the first act of a new opera i'm working on in May. (if you have some extra money burning a hole in your pocket, you can also kick in to our crowdfunding campaign! we have some really fun rewards at various levels)

i have also written a trans, disability-centered, anti-Zionist siddur for Shabbat and Yom Tov. the digital versions are free, and all the text is in the public domain for you to reuse and rework to suit your needs. if you're sick of feeling like you have to choose between affirming Judaism and liturgical fullness, this may be a prayerbook for you! i'm deeply in love with the piyutim that get added to the Pésax liturgy, and they're coming up soon!

a whole bunch of people are spending a whole bunch of time, energy, and effort to try to erase people like me from any kind of life in this country as part of their broader annihilatory war on diversity of all kinds. i am not going to do their work for them. i'm still here. i'm still here. i'm still here

this is a really important piece to me, as it marks a big turning point in my musical development — my first encounter with Standard Broadway Song Form, the first piece where i was *using* harmony instead of harmony just kind of . . . happening to me, and so much more

there are a thousand little compositional tricks i first learned how to pull in this piece, and i'm so deeply proud of the result. it's a work that's near and dear to my heart, and i've wanted to have a really good recording of it for years and years and years

and now i finally do! the performers and technicians did a really incredible job with this — the second movement in particular is just. exquisite! — and it means so much to finally be able to send the audible version of this piece out into the world like this

ok, here we go!!!! COULD NOT BE MORE STOKED to announce that Rebecca Mindock and Doreen Lee will be giving the WORLD PREMIERE of my sonata for oboe and piano, all the days of your vain life, on Thurs, 19 Aug, at 7:30pm ET:

all the days of your vain life is a piece about existentialism, grappling with despair, and staring directly into the abyss and making the conscious, deliberate choice to build joy anyway. it is a lyrical, pyrotechnic tour-de-force for both performers and i love it so much. if you've ever read the book of Ecclesiastes/Qohélet and been like "hm, i wish this were an oboe sonata written by an insane transsexual", WELL HOWDY IS THIS THE PIECE FOR YOU 

among other pieces, the recital features a really lovely suite by Ulysses Kay, so it's got something for everyone and is sure to be a good time. i would love to "see" you there in cyberspace!
