Some details because Trans Mexican Eddie Munson had to be there
(Bringing this over from the discord chat because I don’t have time to write my fic and Trans Gareth is so special to me and I can’t stop thinking of him and eddie and how much they LOVE EACH OTHER… he is Eddie’s Robin)
Eddie’s giving him a lift to band practice, like usual. He gets his permit next month and then he can start shopping around for junky ten year old cars to buy with the money he saved up busting tables the summer after freshman year. But he’ll miss rides with Eddie- it’s kinda their thing.
Eddie’s got the windows rolled down because the AC crapped out again, WASP playing low and gritty on the radio as Eddie taps his fingers on the steering wheel, mimicking the lead guitar riffs.
In the passengers’ seat, he follows suit, his hands gently drumming the beat on his thighs. Under his jeans, any sign of leg hair on his outer thighs has disappeared, two big bald patches from years of whacking on them just like he is now; with drum sticks, hands, forks and spoons- anything he can get his hands on, he uses to drum on any surface available. He hates how smooth it is there, runs his fingers over it when he’s alone in his room and winces. But sometimes it’s nice how the moth patches make the leg hair stand out around it; makes the blond wisps more noticeable and that’s cool.
He’s been banging out beats since he was little and his mom was still trying to get the sticks out of his hands and replace them with hair brushes and pompoms. She’d call out his name til her throat was sore and rip the headphones off his head so he could actually hear her. He winced every time, but not from the ripping off the headphones.
He hated the sound of his name. He told his mom in sixth grade he wanted to go by his middle name because he liked it better- and that wasn’t a lie, it was better, and it was what his mom and even the guys called him to this day. But better wasn’t good. It wasn’t him.
FIC REC! FIC REC! FIC REC! FIC REC!!!!
@dylanwritesgood bless this amazing fic! i need to go back and reread when i get some time. it’s long overdue <3
i keep meaning to make a longer post about it but never do so here is the short version. gareth is trans. the second i saw him on screen i thought “that kid has huge trans energy” and i’m right. just know that any time you mention gareth in a post or fic, in my head i am going “it’s so great that he’s trans” and smiling. that’s all
Bronco Running Wild - A Steddie Fanfic
Steve Harrington has the kind of success in life he didn't imagine a time ago, even before the Upside Down. Alongside Robin Buckley, they work on Orange Point and are sent to visit a small town in Texas. Meanwhile, Eddie Munson is now outside of Indiana. He doesn't want or need his past anymore, building his future as an important musician. Just like he dreamt since he was a kid. Coincidence or a way the destiny is telling them to fix the reason their paths divide, Eddie and Steve find each other. Changed, but with the same burden on their heart.
After two years working on the first chapters, with many doubts and HCs changing, I finally will begin to post this fic. It is still a WIP, adding more or less chapters. I'm not sure how many chapters and how many tears it will have, but I hope you all enjoy it. This is, as you can see, mostly inspired on Orville Peck's songs, as everything began with one in specific. I may do a small playlist sooner or later so you can enjoy the music from each chapter.
I'm planning to update chapters every two weeks, this, so I have time to write more and also edit it and give them a second read. Maybe between Thursday and Wednesday.
Please, remember English isn't my first language, and lamentably I don't have a beta reader. I hope you understand it and enjoy it
Comments and kudos are always welcome! Thanks for your time in reading
Smalltown Boy - Chapter II
READ HERE
Steve and Robin find out Eddie isn't alone in this town on Texas, bringing some friends and family with him. Likewise, building a new community like he used to do. And even seeing the good side of this man, remembering their last and first trip to the beach, Eddie is ready to tell Steve what he thinks about him being in his safe space.
Ohoho more of this! Also, please let me know if you need me to mark somehow the flashbacks? I try to make them part of the narrative, but if it is too hard to follow, I may be able to do something. Thanks for reading, and comments are very appreciated!

The sun goes down, another dreamless night. Eddie was right at his side, and Steve just smiled at this. He turned around, trying not to receive the morning light from his bedroom, but it was useless.
“Hey.” he hears the whisper in his ear and the hold of a gripping hand on his arm. “It’s time to ride, sweetheart.”
Steve acts like he isn’t awake, but his stupid smile makes Eddie shake him harder. He does remember they laughed a bit before the alarm blared and both had to leave bed, holding each other and kissing on the lips and cheeks to take their shower.
It was very early in the morning, and visible it was Eddie who couldn’t fight the sleepless and the bother of not having his twenty hours of sleep. He was already on the sofa, almost falling asleep, when Nancy and Robin called, and he had to answer. Yeah, Steve remembered Eddie answering with a groan while he was finishing preparing some snacks and food for the trip.
By the time it was eight in the morning, Steve was loading the car with their baggage, checking the last details and looking back.
He smiled. He could remember that man with his metal tank top and a smile on his face as he walked towards him with a shoebox in his hands. Eddie’s hair was in a ponytail, but it was still a beautiful mess that made it look like a halo of light was around him. His eyes squinted because of the first sun rays, and his everyday boots were now some simple shoes he could take on and off on the trip.
“What?” Eddie asked as he came close, and Steve was smiling widely.
He just smiled, coming close and holding Eddie for a kiss. He gave back another one before turning around, not wanting a neighbor to be spying on them.
“Ready?” Steve asked.
“No.” Eddie laughed. “But hey, I'm never ready and I still do it. That’s quite something.”
“That's… ah, how do you say it?” Steve tried his best to copy Eddie’s voice. “That’s very metal.”
Eddie just pushed him and moved to the copilot side of the car.
“Anyway, we have the things, the other things, some food and the most important part.” He lifted the shoebox over his head as it was some trophy. “Music! Mixtapes ready for our trip!”
“Please tell me isn’t just metal, Eddie.”
“It is not!” He said proudly. “I understand you three aren’t as cultured as I’m in music, especially you, so I made different tapes with different moods, and different kinds of music. You will be listening to Black Sabbath and then suddenly, by my bad luck, ABBA.”
Steve shook his head because more than once he saw Eddie's lips moving alongside ABBA or Cher.
“Sounds like fun.” Steve came closer to open the door. “Ladies first.”
Eddie just chuckled and nodded, taking his place and waiting for Steve to do the same in the driver's seat. He did this but looked at the house one last time. And Steve could remember all the feelings he had at that moment.
“Everything ok?” Eddie asked. “I thought I was the anxious one.”
“I’m ok.” Steve smiled, but it wasn’t a happy smile and Eddie knew it, already learning how to read this man. “It is just… well…” he sighed. “Never mind.”
“Are you sure? You know you can talk about it.” Eddie said in a lovely manner, letting his hand reach for Steve’s.
“Don’t worry.” he replied, coming close for another one of those kisses he adored so much. “We have to go, Nancy and Robin are waiting for us.”
He also remembered how he didn’t hold his strength and let the car door close with enough force to make a strong noise. And he could hear it now, a booming noise over his head and his good ear, while the other began to have an annoying pitch.
“So, uh. I’m Gareth. In case you were wondering.” His arms are firm across his chest. They protect him, keep the frantic beating of his heart under wraps. They’re a firm line, a warning not to cross him. He’s thought about this--done nothing but think about this--and the band will accept it. They have to.
Silence. Silence. Silence. The kind that rings, making his garage feel cold and empty. Like it did before Hellfire and the band. Before he had friends. Fellow freaks. Outcasts. Acceptance.
“Dude, what the fuck!” says Garth.
Eddie laughs, a loud, braying sound. “Good to have you aboard, Gareth."
“You can’t do that,” Garth whines. “You can’t steal my name like that!”
Gareth goes hot. He knew this would happen, but he’s embarrassed all the same.
“He didn’t steal your name, dude.” Eddie balls up one of their band posters, an old gig that they forgot to advertise for, and chucks it at Garth. He swats it away, looking grumpy. “He elevated it. Made it his own. Gave it that certain something we all knew was missing, but couldn’t quite put our finger on.”
Garth doesn’t disagree. “That’s no fucking fair, man. I want an ‘e’ in my name. ‘Gareth’ sounds way cooler than ‘Garth.‘“ He pauses, plucking at his base on its stand. “Say, how much does it cost to change your name? Like, a hundred bucks, right? I’ve got a hundred bucks.”
And Gareth’s eyes sting, and ugh, that’s so lame. He clears his throat. Grabs his drumsticks and twirls them. “You can’t steal my name, dude. I claimed it.”
Garth is all indignance, but Eddie says, “He’s got a point, dude,” and that’s that.
“Yo,” pipes up Jeff, the only one who already knew. Who Gareth trusted before his wardrobe changed, before he cut his hair, when the word “tomboy” still made him feel seen instead of erased. “Are we practicing or what?”
“Don’t look at me,” Eddie protests. “My man Gareth over here is the one holding up our rock sesh.”
“Yeah, Gareth,” Garth complains. “Stop holding up our sesh.”
Gareth slides onto his stool and throws his nervous energy into the song. He doesn’t need it. Not with these guys.
