Communication
Nearly twenty years ago now i wrote a short story, an almost Utopian view of the world in the future. It was nothing other than a short story, not a prediction or prophesy of any sort. I remember being asked the question once whilst i was still young about what was the most important invention ever, what fulled the evolutionary jumps that have happened from time to time. That of ancient Greece? (The Roman stuff pretty much all came from Greece that came hitherto from the east- from the great and learned nations of Persia and China, some from India) Then that of the agricultural revolution and later the industrial revolution and it occurred to me that mans greatest invention was not fire or soap. Neither was it antibiotics or the understanding of physics that many would make you believe. It was the simplest thing. It was speech. The ability to transfer information. The ability to transfer your thoughts to someone else. They have their thoughts and you have yours and the joining of the two is greater than the sum of their separate parts. two and two makes five so to speak. Now add to that since the nineteen hundreds the again rapid progression. (i know people will argue that it is because of war, but there is no more war now than there has always been. Less now if you allow for population growth.) It is not coincidence that it fits with the invention of the telephone, telegraph and telex. It is not wrong that it speeds up with the invention of the fax, cheaper telephony and the advent of global mail. More so now with the web. Every invention or idea is based upon someone else s thoughts. I suppose that everything i write has a basis upon something that i have read, even though i do not imagine it to be so. Ah sorry you are probably wondering where i have come from with this comment and more so where it is going to. I have read all the ideas of what people intend publishing this year and there is a lifetime of work in there of all different genres, styles, content, themes and i think it is wonderful that this is all possible. Another golden age in its own way, I am getting to see what so many have to say about the world. I think perhaps another golden age has arrived. I can communicate now easily across the world and if you read all i said, the transference of information i feel is the answer.
