I did some large repainting for my nephews for Christmas. I found the carrier&cars on clearance, and the racer at an antique place. Both the boys are into cars and robots, so what better than to paint some cars?
So the cars in question are plastic, not diecast, so there wasn't any paint to remove, but I did some light sanding to give the paint purchase.
The paint itself went on alright. I did a couple of coats for sure coverage, but the paint mostly covered in one coat. I just used generic craft acrylic for these. (Pictured: the bright blue the Batmobile started as. I realized I never grabbed pictures of the original cars, but to give an idea.)
I had to put some thinking into how Magnus's trailer colors would work since it's a totally different shape, so some creative liberties there. The inside is bright yellow plastic like the whole carrier truck started as, and I ultimately decided to leave it just for my own sanity. When his sides are closed up, it gives kind of a cool, internally lit effect that I think is neat.
The cars are going inside for when I present it to my nephew, and I'm really happy the paint and gloss coat didn't gum up the hinges.
Final coat to make everyone shiny pending! But I'm very happy with how these came out! I feel like I'm improving in my painting and fine motor skills with these.
For the new year, I have some new power tools to play with and new techniques to try out with these custom repaints and I can't wait to get into it!
