The best interpretation of Bumblebee (in my humble opinion) is one where he emerged at the start of the war/part way through it. There’s the tragedy of someone so young only ever knowing a raging war that destroys everything in its path, and the tragedy of Bee not even registering it because the war has ALWAYS been there.
It also serves as a way to make Bee stand out from his fellow Autobots and reasons why he specifically loves Earth so much when he gets there.
A Bumblebee born into a war torn world will never have the same motivation to win the war as his allies. He’s not fighting to reclaim the world Cybertron was before the war because he never knew it.
“Hey, do you remember the Crystal Gardens in Iacon?” Bee doesn’t.
“Remember that really scary ride at Six Lasers? The one with the crazy loop?” Bee doesn’t.
“Do you remember that time when people thought it was so cool to paint their plates neon green? Trends were crazy back then.” Bee doesn’t.
I think Bee fights to win the war because it seems to matter SO MUCH to everyone else.
I think it would eat Optimus up inside that Bee only ever gets to experience the worst parts of Cybertron because that’s all that’s left. And the worst part is that Bee takes all of it in stride with a smile on his face. Bee thinks it’s been a good day when everyone comes back from an energon scouting mission unharmed, not even registering the fact that things are bad enough that they have to scout for energon in the first place. Bee would never think to blame Optimus for his part in starting this war the same way Optimus blames himself.
And then Bee comes to Earth and it’s just so…quiet.
The war isn’t on Earth.
And Bee has never known it to be so peaceful…
Just something about peppy characters somehow managing to focus on the pretty rainbow reflections on the surface an oil spill. Kills me so good inside.
