TF Mercy Silverbolt and Cybertronian form-dysphoria
(This Silverbolt was pulled from an art scene by @gelu-babosa-multiversal )
Kachow! Silverbolt the jet has always wanted to be a car!
Cargender? Well, let's dive into it!
In Transformers: Mercy, the bots do not have gender like we know it. The text translates their pronouns to what they would have chosen in English if they knew about concepts of gender. But in their own language? Their third person singular pronouns are gender neutral. They have "animate" and "inanimate" pronouns (note: some bots are identifying as "it" which is the only time Cybertronians notice something different!).
I do have bots transgender in the way we are used to. Especially with Vehicons nurturing their individuality, changing pronouns and forms. I do have bots whose pronouns don't care what their bodies look like (Trepan has a body like TFP Arcee for example). Also, I have a few nonbinary or agender characters too!
But for asexual bots who don't think in terms of masculinity or femininity, what do they think about? How do they categorize each other? By form, of course! And whew, do they discriminate based on that!
I believe that in the Aligned Continuity, bots are restricted to certain kinds of forms. They have classes. Because what is important in this continuity is the caste system where bots of certain forms were made into slaves or were lower in society while others were higher. During the War, it was also a big deal that the Decepticons had most of the Seekers while the Autobots lacked fliers. TF Exodus also talked about the Autobots trying to figure out the surgery to make wheeled bots into fliers.
Decepticons had figured it out, so Megatron went from tank to jet. Cybertronians can't just scan things willy-nilly and gain new parts geared for flying or driving. Other shows like Rescue Bots kinda break this lore but that's the Aligned Continuity for you.
Now Silverbolt. Classically, this character is described as a jet who is afraid of heights. Oh, such potential to flesh that out.
In Transformers: Mercy, Silverbolt is a powerful Autobot and the core of the Combiner Superion. He acts arrogant and is hostile to Decepticons to the point where the reader is like Primus, stop with the drama!
Predaking looks up Silverbolt in the archives and finds a video of him when he was a student at Vos' academy.
Silverbolt is much more timid than other Seekers to fly in formations. It does not come naturally. It scares him. But he is forced to perform as a Seeker all his life.
Now the War comes. Almost every Seeker pledges allegiance to the Decepticons. Only a few Seekers become Autobots. I imagine, they would be viewed with a lot of suspicion like they are spies. So the Autobot Seekers rebranded themselves as different than Seekers—as "Aerialbots". They overcompensate constantly to show they are true loyal Autobots. This is why Aerialbots are often jerks in Mercy!
Silverbolt was so eager to prove he was a good Autobot Seeker that he signed up to be in a Combiner experiment. Now, he has a team. He is their leader.
Silverbolt however, likes to get away from them because he doesn't feel like he's really "one of the jets". He is stuck in his responsibilities, however. The Autobots need that Combiner and all the jets they can get. Silverbolt cannot become a wheeler even though the surgery is now possible.
Silverbolt wishes that he had been forged as a wheeler but rejects the idea of becoming one. He blames his responsibilities and holds the belief that Cybertronians should stay in the classes they were forged in. That is him trying to cope, trying to make himself accept his body. He pushes that belief onto others like Krok, who went from crocodile to jet and back. Basically he is saying look, Krok detransitioned, so transitioning is bad!
But Krok had said he only changed forms because he had been pressured to. So the only issue is bots having forms they didn't desire.
Silverbolt wants to shut down the conversation because the longing to have wheels hurts him too much. He says things like he can't change forms because of responsibilities and also changing forms is just bad. He's making it feel impossible so he doesn't have to think about it. He worries what the other jets will think. He probably imagines proud jets laughing at him and thinking he is stupid to give up flight abilities.
This bot really, really would rather roll out like other Autobots.
Some art works inspired by @shelaar Protection Protocol story. obviously names above each one in this line up, in order we have new colors, silver base, and old colors. So far just the littles for now perhaps in the future I’ll make the other babies and adults.
TFCon was so fun. Every convention I catch I enjoy more than the last, and I miss it more when it's finally over. I hope we're able to catch the next one in LA. So nice to hear from the voice actors you love and the writers you have the highest appreciation for.
I'm also so glad that my costume made it through the bulk of the weekend even though its duct tape kept failing. A huge thanks to everyone who gave compliments. I'm eager to make improvements now and have a better version ready for Renn Faire. @foxxiwaves took great photos with a proper camera and we'll get those edited once we're home.
I'm sitting on several new costume ideas, but none of them are as intensive as Silverbolt. I want to put most of my energy into creating new jacket artwork and selling through a made-to-order website, maybe eventually being ready to hold a booth at the next Baltimore TFCon.
Sneek peek for my next fit:
