Hi! I'm starting to do some research for what a ship's provisions might look like upon leaving port, for the purposes of a D&D game. It's pretty fictionalized, only 22 total living crew (it's mostly manned by skeletons) but still, I want to base it off of what a ship might actually have, and what quantities they'd have it in. Do you have any suggestions for where to start? I have no idea, and I ask because you seem to probably have at least some, given the nature of your (very good) comic
Sure thing! Digitized ship account books and logbooks (many of which live on archive.org) sometimes have provision lists, but it’s a hit or miss what ones record that information and they can be incomplete or list only provisions taken during the voyage when the vessel resupplied.
So I like this source as a good example to reference. Since it’s a stores list for a whaling vessel there are things included that are exclusive to that industry, but it also gives a great general sense of what a 20-30ish person crew would be departing with on a voyage set to last 3+ years (with resupplies often every 5/6 months)
Best of luck with your research and game!
