oh coco being a lesbian was made very clear in the books! in a flashback, velvet remembers her as being notorious for breaking girls' hearts in their combat school, coco's pov has her refer to several girls as hot or other synonyms, and it's even stated that part of why she wears sunglasses is so people can't see her staring at girls. they don't shy away from it at all; it's more that the books tend to go ignored for a number of reasons (some more valid than others hah).
