[context, I am transmasc and have been a singer since childhood. There was some inexplicable property to my voice where for years I absolutely could not stand listening to it, even when others would tell me it was a good recording. It felt screechy, and a tiny bit out of tune to me. I have recently identified this feeling as dysphoria. I’ve been taking T for a while and recently my voice dropped significantly and I’m having to relearn how to hit high notes now that I need to flip into my head/quasi-falsetto range to do it.]
Something weird about relearning how to sing high is… I think I was maybe actually never doing it with correct technique, even when I was singing a high C as a soprano 1… and I was maybe just kind of forcing it bc I could? I’ve always been able to push my belt and my chest register very high, so the idea that I was always pushing my highest notes out in a way that both didn’t sound ideal and was probably not the healthiest isn’t out of the question.
This is to say whatever weird quality that I absolutely could not stand about my high voice that nobody else really minded too much, whatever it was about it that was nails on a chalkboard to me, is basically gone? My high voice has a really airy fluteish quality to it now (when I can get it to come out right which I’m working on) and I don’t hate the way it sounds anymore. It’s thinner but sounds better, more clear and in tune. I think it might just be because since it’s so difficult to hit those notes now I’m being forced to sing them with proper support and technique, and they just sound better now.
