Delhi-NCR Transport Strike Begins: 3-Day Taxi, Auto & Truck Shutdown Raises Supply Concerns

A three-day strike by taxi, auto-rickshaw, and commercial vehicle drivers has begun across Delhi-NCR, potentially disrupting daily commute and essential supply chains.

The protest, scheduled from May 21 to May 23, has been called by multiple driver unions in response to rising fuel prices, inflation, and unchanged fare structures under the Delhi-NCR city taxi scheme. Union leaders argue that the existing fare rates, fixed nearly 15 years ago, are no longer viable amid increasing operational costs.

According to transport unions, nearly 1.7 million vehicles may be impacted by the strike. While app-based services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido are currently operating normally, availability may fluctuate if participation increases.

The strike has also received support from over 68 transport associations, which are additionally opposing recent policy changes such as increased green cess on commercial vehicles.

Concerns have been raised over possible disruptions in the supply of essential goods such as fruits, vegetables, milk, bread, and eggs, as trucks may avoid entering major Delhi markets like Azadpur and Ghazipur mandis during the protest period.

The impact is expected to extend to surrounding NCR regions including Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, and others, potentially affecting both passenger travel and logistics movement.

However, not all unions are participating in the strike, and some major transport associations have opted out, which may prevent a complete shutdown of services in the capital.

Authorities are monitoring the situation as commuters and businesses brace for possible delays and price fluctuations.
