To all the trans folk this holiday season…

If you had to go back into the closet to stay safe around your family you’re amazing. It takes a lot of strength and courage to do something so hard. It has to be so hard to hear your deadname and be misgendered by so many people. I support you and your decision. You’re not less trans for doing so. Stay safe and strong.

To all those who came out and were rejected, you are brave. You stood up for who you are and there’s nothing wrong with that. You know who you are and no matter what your family says doesn’t change that. I admire your bravery for doing something so hard to do. Stay safe and strong.

To those who had no family or no place to spend the holidays, you are loved. We are a community in which we are here to love and support each other in these hard times. You’ll find a family. You’ll find someone who cares for you with all their heart. Stay safe and strong you’re not alone.

Those of which who came out and were accepted, you are amazing. You did something that is so scary and full of so much uncertainty. I’m happy you’ve found your place. Stay safe and strong.

At a group therapy session I attended last night, we discussed ways to take care of yourself from a emotional and mental stand point. I sat back and listened as hands were raised and ideas were shared. Some were specific while others were vague, but they all had a common theme: “Learning to Love Yourself.” It’s something I have said for a long time, “You deserve love, and that starts from within.” It doesn’t matter what if you do something specific like take a warm bubble bath. It doesn’t matter if you are vague and just want to work on addressing yourself with love and respect. However you are able to do it, just make sure you work on strengthening the love you have for yourself. For me, I often reward myself by working hard to meet a goal and then give myself something in return such as a hike through the forrest, buying something cute, or sometimes even going somewhere special. It’s just enough motivation for me to keep moving forward and keep achieving my goals. Outside of these specific goals, I found it equally as important to set vague goals as well. I will tell myself that once a day I will tell myself something I like seeing in the mirror. I will make sure my internal thoughts are the same towards myself as a I would treat a friend. And I will encourage myself to find reasons to smile throughout the day. At first these goals were hard, and often I failed to succeed. But with determination and continued effort, these things have become second nature. No longer do I need to remind myself to smile, I just do it naturally. No longer do I hide from the mirrors as I know many reasons why I love what I see.
