It's times like this when I'm thankful for my readers, who try out my recipes and let me know how they are and if there's anything missing, wrong, or otherwise askew with them. But I don't think I'm quite this bad. MrsB recently pointed out a recipe by Paula Deen (you know, the one famous for heart attack-inducing favorites like meat on meat on Krispy Kreme donuts...) that left several readers, uh, confused as to how exactly one makes English peas. Check out her recipe*:
Ingredients
* 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
* 2 cans (14 1/2-ounces) English peas, drained
Directions
Melt the butter in small pot and add the peas. Cook over medium heat until peas are warm.
*Note that I use the term "recipe" very, very lightly here.
Anyway, this recipe seemed far too highbrow for many readers over at FoodNetwork.com, as evidenced by the confused comments and snarky modifications made to this seemingly simple dish:
Can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to do with the paper from the butter wrap that's in the melted butter? Is this a garnish? Also, in the future can I use margarine? If so, do I wait until the plastic container melts completely before serving?
I can only give this 3 stars due to the end result. After draining the peas I melted the butter then added the peas. The paper labels on the cans absorbed much of the butter, then the cans themselves scratched the inside of my saucepan while stirring. Very upsetting, and the presentation... well, there's only so much you can do with butter warmed cans of drained peas. I opted for parsley to class up the plates.
I drained out the peas and added the cans to the butter, but the cans came out with a really tinny taste.
I didn't read the recipe carefully. I forgot to add the peas and used 2 sticks of butter, instead of 1/2. Refusing to panic, I served my guests a small cup of the melted butter, to which I added a few chopped green onions, prior to the main meal (assorted Healthy Choice dinners. I told my guests it was "Paula's Special Soup". It got rave reviews. Now I have to send everyone the recipe. Thanks, Paula. Highly recommend.
I approached this recipe a little differently. I added 2 sticks of butter and only one can of peas. It was the most delicious pea soup I ever ate. Extra butter, is there anything it can't do? Oh, gotta go, the EMT crew is here...
I modified this recipe by adding a pinch of salt. Unfortunately, I still had a pan of melted butter & a now-salted tin can. Am I missing a step?
HELP!! I melted the butter and added the cans of peas. Can I open them now, or will they just come out on their own?
I could literally go on for ages, but why don't you pop over and check out the rest for yourself. ;) And while we're at it, how would you improve on this recipe? Leave the paper on, maybe take the peas out of the can, triple the butter for some "Paula Deen special soup"?
