My Child isn’t Traumatized
In the same vein as my “My child is neurotypical” post, I’m making one about trauma experiences. They take the form of a parent in denial saying “My child isn’t traumatized” and the response of “Your child is X” where X is a common ‘living with trauma’ experience phrased as if coming from a teacher.
(I’ll be updating these as I make more)
Your child is constantly looking over their shoulder
Your child has *that place* they never want to go back to
Your child has *that person* they never want to see again
Your child gets extremely defensive whenever somebody runs into their boundaries
Your child just snapped viciously at you over something seemingly small - @sombeon on twitter
Your child keeps trying to find something traumatic in their past
Your child has tons of memory gaps
Your child freezes up when they’re stressed
Your child is uncomfortable letting down their guard around other people
Your child has anxiety eating in front of people
Your child responds to stress by shutting down
Your child immediately and excessively apologizes for everything
Your child tries to avoid fights by making everybody happy
When Lucas gets overwhelmed, it's best to give him some space. Being in the army, seeing the things he did.
They messed with him and sometimes, he just can't hold it in anymore. Only Shane can talk him down when he's this far gone. A hug, a real hug can help ground him. Sometimes, he snaps..he's almost inconsolable in this state. Hyperventilating, gasping for air, hitting, clawing, throwing.
Anything to get away from the carnage, the scent of blood and burning flesh. The screams of pain.. "MEDIC!" He can see the life fading from so many pairs of eyes, his arms thrusting trying to perform chest compressions. All while bullets fly by and grenades explode around them. He covers them in a last ditch effort to keep them safe, he survived..why him? Why does he feel so fucking bad that he made it back in one piece? Why does he just wish he could close his eyes some nights and not wake up? He just wants to be held, he just wants to feel safe.
