Dry, lengthy, bland— that and a few other unsavory words had been tossed between the drunken Knights, quietly jeering the proceedings of the evening from their tucked corner; away from the nobels and merchants who were wholly different and perhaps more interested in the subject matter. Though Haleth could well hide her inebriation, those numerous drinks made their presence known in the way she smiled (a rather ill-fitting expression for her typically stoic face), how she lounged languid as draped silk, and perhaps, only as Phillip may have noticed, how often her pretty eyes landed in his direction (sometimes to share an eye-roll that he could not reciprocate due to the many watching him, other times simply to admire.)

It was in the avoidance of unsavory conversation that Haleth found herself caught in Phillip's escape, pulled aside and stumbled behind a tall velvet curtain the next room over. Haleth gasps, fragrant mulled wine candied on her breath; the black dress she wore, Marquinic in style, exposed the pale flesh of her back— the cold of the glass window plunged into her like ice-carved knives and so she arched into his broad chest, roughly, (and perhaps ill-mannered), bodily, like a carnal woman sickened by a passion he could never give her.

"I cannot imagine I am any more interesting—" her jeering is immediately silenced, as if predicted, by his palm flush across her mouth. If she were not already blushing, then her face was certainly now red; and she is grateful then for the dim of the rain-soaked evening, that it be dark enough to shadow her hollow-wide pupils (that which is the eyes of a starved, midnight beast), and loud enough from the room adjacent to muffle her pounding heart (drumming like devils charged behind the gates of hell.)

SHE LOOKS AT THE PRINCE LIKE HE'S CANDYFLOSS. Make no mistake, the Spider has a sweet tooth, but even she has her limits. Too sweet, too syrupy and ungainly. There's no way to look dignified when you eat candyfloss. "He's such a noble young man," she says, as if she'd just swallowed poison instead. "So honorable, so dutiful, so good." Venomous, irritable. It didn't matter if he's the one who'd spilled her blood, or if his blood had been spilled. The feud had been going on before his grandfather's grandfather had been old enough to hold a sword.

"One might picture him in a storybook, rescuing a blushing maiden from a wicked beast, perhaps in enchanted armor. Oh, and of course they share true love's kiss." She's disgusted by it all. He slots so neatly into his role, enemy of the fairies, hero to the people, the wise young man poised to take the throne. If she could die, he'd no doubt see to it himself. It is a consolation at best to worm her way under his skin, and keep her claws neatly put away.

THE GIRL, HOWEVER, IS A GLASS MARBLE amidst river stones. Pretty as a pearl, with nacreous eyes that shone with a vicious light, and hair so long she could strangle a man with it. What a delightful little monster she makes, all lilting venom and sharp-toothed laughs. "I have never seen a creature made up of such poisoned lace. She could twist men's affections as easily as their necks, and makes no secret of it at all." It's something of a marvel to Ruby, always with four thoughts in her mind at once, and not a single one making it past her lips.

"I think she'd try to sink her little teeth into my neck, if only to see how I taste." And Ruby would very much like to do the same.

The Scotswoman laughed as she held him tighter and mussed his hair. "I've hunted plenty of 'em in my days an' they didn't squeal as much as you do!"
