Trayvon Martin would have been 18 years old today. Our prayers go out to his family, who I am sure is having a difficult time today.
The Trayvon Martin case hit close to home for the members of The Cynical Owl team which led us to have our film debut “R.A.G.E” which was based on the Trayvon case. Check it out above.
Spread peace and love.
Did I seriously just see a poll on TMZ that said 61% of Americans call Zimmerman a HERO. Not even “innocent". But a HERO.
Conveniently, the only people saying this isn't a case of race are all white.
"Angel"
by Angela Jackson
for Jerry Ward
I am the only one here.
I stand in my one place and I can see a good piece down the road. I am yonder, further than the chunk of your stone. Right now, directly, I am persimmon falling free and the prisoner opening up in me. Don’t come through my door and want to run my house. I am the angel who sweep air in and out my own dancing body. I got good eyes. I can see. A good piece down the road. Clear to God murmuring in me. My head is the burning bush. What I hold in my hand is the promised land. I set my people free in me. And we walk without wandering like people named after mere plants, because we are tree and high-stepping roots cake-walking in this promised place. Where I go is where I am now. Don’t mess with me: you hurt yourself. In the middle of my stride now. I am walking yes indeed I am walking through my own house. I am walking yes indeed on my own piece of road. Toting my own load and yours and mine. I tell you I feel fine and clear this morning even when it’s night and a full moon with my thumbprint on it. Everything is clamorous and quiet. I am the only One here. And we don’t break. No indeed. Come hell and high water. We don’t break for nothing.
Imperfection
It’s absolutely shameful how some people think that only because a child isn’t perfect vs. a child that is close to ‘perfection’ said child who isn’t perfect deserves to die way more than the ‘perfect’ child. Just because an individual does drugs does not mean they are less of a human than an individual who is sober. just because an individual does not earn good grades does not mean they are less of a human than a child who does earn good grades. just because an individual decides to not be celibate does not mean they are less of a human than an individual who stays a virgin. so on and so forth. News flash: we are all imperfect beings whether we like it or not, and because of our imperfections not one of us should decided who is more worthy to live or not.
Martin Bashir on Trayvon Martin.
Identifying invisible privilege as a symptom of the racism virus is important because it demonstrates how people who seemingly do no harm can still contribute to a harmful system.
As with infectious disease, while you may never personally show symptoms or be impacted negatively, you can still spread the pathogen. In other words:
If you’re not racist but you’re a racist apologist, you’re part of the problem.
If you’re not racist but you’re racist tolerant, you’re part of the problem.
If all of your social interactions occur within the bubble of invisible privilege, and you genuinely believe your advantages are purely the result of meritocracy, you’re not a racist… You’re a carrier.
If you exist inside a system that benefits you to the detriment of others, and do nothing to challenge the status quo, you’re enforcing it. The antibody for racism is compassion.
