Having been a driver, cyclist, and pedestrian in Chicago, I totally get how you feel; I learned to drive in a pretty rural/'burb-ish area and I always need to brace myself for how aggressively people drive in the city. Is the cost of having a Zipcar membership lower than taking a taxi/Uber/Lyft for the few instances you need to haul a bunch of stuff?

I haven’t done the math, but usually when I’m using a cab it’s to get from one place to another, rather than to run an errand -- like “I don’t feel well, I’m gonna take a cab home”. 

Zipcar membership through my org (we have a deal) is pretty cheap, I think something like $20 a year? Then of course you pay hourly for the car but that’s not so bad either. I guess the upshot is I use them for different purposes, so I don’t cost-compare. 

I spend...maybe $300 a year on non-public transit? And another $1200 yearly for a monthly unlimited transit pass on the CTA.

I don’t remember seeing this come in, I’m sorry!1: I bite my nails. A lot. All the time. I’ve tried painting them, getting fancy gel nails, nothing has worked. When I got gel nails I bit them until they cracked down the middle and peeled them off. Somehow my real nails stayed intact.2: I just really love knowing about people. Like my coworkers, I ask them so many random questions because yeah bro, tell me about your family probz and dreams and that deathly embarrassing story from sixth grade. (I kinda feel like nobody ever does that for me though. Friends, coworkers, people I date. Kinda makes me sad.)3: My three best best friends live in different states. One here with me, one in Pittsburgh, PA, and one in Garden City, KS. Them bitches. Kind of want us all to move to California and be besties fuh lyfe. None of them have met each other either so that’s cool?4: I’ve really been craving some new metal//ink, particularly a septum piercing. Which is odd for me, but I just really want one. I need to get my stupid ears pierced first tho.5: Idk. I haven’t shaved my pits in a month and I love it? That’s fun.

I am okay, love, thank you. I'm glad you got to experience corn dogs during state fair season without having to actual go to a state fair and smell the livestock, and I'm especially glad that you got to indoctrinate non-Americans in the ways of the Dog of Corn.

I had a good, healthy conversation with an ex, and I think I made a friend, which I've never done before. I started writing a murder mystery which is something Ive never dreamed of and its the most fun Ive had ever. Cakes. Cupcakes. Mini Cupcakes :)

Murder mysteries scare me because they are SO TERRIBLE/HARD to write and I am therefore very excited for you! Yay, murder! Yay, cupcakes!!

What a lovely Monday present to yourself! With this in mind, I bought myself a blueberry scone on the way to work. It is not chocolate, but it's better than a popsicle for breakfast (that was yesterday).

Please, we all know that even people who are into bullshit like healing mind waves want peer reviewed sources and corroborating witnesses when it comes to sexual assault. I hope that guy doesn't have to be on your committee though. Like, ew.

People who publish articles without fucking p values want video evidence. I also hope that? But he's the only other big FISH person and that looks like it's going to be a major component of my thesis work.

I think that this is also a reason why sexual assault is greatly under reported. The idea of being innocent until proven guilty should be sacred, but it seems to go beyond that in court to "innocent and how dare you accuse that person"

Dudes in positions of authority--especially over young women, especially over young women who are isolated in a field where the majority of their contemporaries and superiors are men--always get to be innocent of wrongdoing. "He didn't mean it! She entrapped him! Her breasts were just THERE, being DISTRACTING." And then you don't have """evidence""" and you're fucked.

Read your tags on the sexual assault/field research post, and yeah, now that I think of it, people -- myself included -- really don't take it seriously. When you told me that story, I was like, "Hopefully he researches something boring and you never work in his lab," but ideally there'd be no question that he'd get reported and at least get a warning and made to sit through workshops (for a first offense).

I think “casual” sexism and harassment are super common and hard to fight in science academia (the only field in which I am qualified to speculate; maybe it works the same way in all of academia) because there’s this huge emphasis on FACTS. Do you have PROOF that this professor was harassing you? What did he SAY that you can QUOTE? Were there corroborating WITNESSES? Oh, did he just stare at your cleavage for the entirety of your interview and give you occasional sleazy looks? But he didn’t say anything you can prove, right? So it didn’t happen. Buck it up. If you want a future in science, the boys club is something you just have to deal with.

I love that you all responded by yelling. I really do. I've been in kind of a pack-it-up-and-disappear mood lately, which I KNOW is not a good thing. So I'm staying.

It means a lot to stay in touch with you three via Facebook, and I forgot that it goes the other way too.
