#HideandSeek is a 1942 #oil on #canvas #painting in the collection of the Museum of Modern #Art in New York City, painted by Pavel #Tchelitchew. ⠀ Here's a bit about the #treetastic painting from the blog "A Pile of Things."⠀ ⠀ "Begun in Vermont during World War II, Hide-and-Seek presents an apocalyptic vision of the childhood game of its title. A large #tree dominates the canvas, its contours simultaneously conjuring a knobby hand and the profiles of children with their mouths open in horror. Tchelitchew once described his art as "a kind of science of metamorphosis... as magic which can transform any visible object into a whole series of other objects." Just as many of the forms in this painting offer double or multiple readings, the game of hid-and-seek is enacted here on two levels- by the children depicted in the work and by the viewer, for whom endless discoveries are embedded in the dense thicket of imagery.⠀ ⠀ Pavel Tchelitchew (1898-1957) was a Russian #surrealist painter who made quite the splash in the US as well. The #MoMA site features an excellent biography of the artist and "Pavel Tchelitchew: Metamorphoses" looks to be an excellent book of his work.
