I’m not tribalistic and can view people as individuals instead of treating them like representatives of a collective. People get genuinely upset whenever someone who shares their identity rejects a belief, label, or expectation associated with that identity. For example, if a mixed person rejects the one drop rule, some people take it personally and act like they’re being rejected. If a woman rejects certain aspects of womanhood, some women react the same way and treat it as a personal attack.
People act like sharing an identity creates loyalty, obligation, or agreement. They expect everyone in the group to move as one unit, and when someone doesn’t, they get angry about it. Not everyone sees themselves as part of a collective first. Some people just see themselves as individuals, and the fact that this bothers people so much says a lot.
