"I hate you," Thor stated coldly to Loki, but the effect wasn't what he expected it to be considering he was currently dressed as what he could only describe as a... swamp monster. Thor had lost a bet to Loki, who had dared him to steal one of Odin's trophies. Their game of daring each into doing risky and stupid things was getting dangerous, but neither of them were willing to give up or stop. Thor would make it. And Loki would pay for it, he was already planning a revenge.

"What am I to do again?" Thor checked his hideous reflection in the mirror, pulling the hood that hid him completely and made him look like some sort of cryptid monster, "it smells like someone threw up inside this costume. Where did you find it?"

Wanda sat curled on her bed.  Her powers hadn’t felt right since she’d saved Steve.  They had almost been out of control to say the least.  She’d wake up and have to straighten her room because her powers had shifted things in her room.  She didn’t turn as the door opened, but she heard Natasha’s voice.  That was unexpected, but the voice that spoke in return was one she didn’t know.

‘ i think it is still customary for you to bow to me. even if it is not an official audience. ’ she is hardly queenly, barefoot and curled up on her chaise, book in her lap. blue eyes never leave the page she is reading, and it was only her lady’s announcement of her father’s arrival that alerted her to his presence. otherwise she might have ignored him in favor of the novel. 

a heavy sigh leaves her as she finally looks up, closing her book, ‘ at the waist. ’

     No matter what he said or did, someone was always going to get hurt. In times like this he’s at a loss for words, he’s not to sure what to say to lift the other’s spirits, but he knows that’s something he isn’t too good at. If only he had Frigga’s soft spoken tone and gentle ways of teaching. Maybe, just maybe if he had such skills, things could’ve been so different. But Odin understands that the relationship Loki has with Frigga will never be similar to the one he has with Thor. If only he had been a bit better, he thought he was doing well, compared to the many mistakes he had made with her, but that’s not something he liked to think of for too long.

it almost feels...wrong, the silence of the throne room is almost deafening. not days ago it had been filled with the cheers of asgard’s people, of subjects looking toward a bright future. now only a few stand about, most guards, standing still as a statue. the throne stands empty, thor is banished, odin stuck in his slumber ( though still she swears she can feel his eyes upon her, as if he knows that happens behind his back ) and only loki remains. 

at the sight of him she suddenly remembers to breathe, a smile breaking on full lips. this is what they have waited years for-- to marry, to finally be together, to forget the need to hide away from odin. one of her ladies trials close behind her as she makes her way to him, hands taking his when finally she comes to a stop.

‘ there’s no going back now, ’ she teases, ‘ odin will have our heads if we make a fool of him and regret it. ’

“ if you can’t stay,  let me come. ” even as he says it,  he knows that it cannot be.  though he has tried to turn away from their father’s legacy with every choice he makes,  he cannot escape the choice that spelled odin’s ruin as a father and legacy as asgard’s king: thor cannot serve asgard and his brother. he cannot be a good king and a good man. 

over these last few months,  he has tried his best to give his brother his space ---- to refrain from the casual touches that are too easy for him to fall back into.  he cannot find it in him to do so now. thor catches loki by the wrist,  knowing that nothing he does will keep loki here,  but knowing he will try nevertheless.  it is in both of their natures, practically a law of the universe ; they move in different directions,  and no matter how hard they try ( and they have tried ) neither can change course. 

each day they wake,  trying to make amends,  to find common ground,  to find a way back to the family they might have been,  years and years ago.  each day,  it becomes more and more obvious that all they know how to do is reopen old wounds. 

“ loki, ”  he says,  not bothering to hide the panicked edge to his voice. “ brother. i am sorry. there is a place for you here.  with me. i cannot rule without you. ”
