Elegantly slender fingers traced the rim of the glass atop the bar, but while one could pretend that this black tie event was one of beautiful and well-to-do attendees-- she could not agree. And the polish that had lined her once immaculate nails had eroded, either due to her gallivants into the jungle, the salt of the ocean, or simple wear and tear without upkeep. She had only noticed now, when it might have mattered. A black tie event. How ridiculous. Thieves, mercenaries, smugglers, kidnappers, murderers, assassins were only a few of those who were guests at this masquerade. On such a savage island, she should have been grateful for a taste of high society, but to mingle with those she knew wanted her dead without protection; she was not dim. They would take any chance they had to break the spirit of their captors, and the crown princess was sure they had more than just festivities in mind during this gathering.
And so she had donned a mask that covered the entirety of her face, obscuring her identity with the ornately decorated and silver accented black piece. It worked rather well, in fact, with the dress she had put together. Sewn to fit around the bodice, it was a snug fit on her body, highlighting what she wished to show. And her hair, previously untamed, she had pinned some back, but left half of her honey-brown locks down to frame the mask. All in all, she aimed to be a mystery, and an observer. Ultimately, not a perceived threat. An underestimation, but it would be their fault for making it to begin with.
She had not taken a drink yet. Thankfully, her mask allowed an appropriately wide enough slit at her mouth. No need to remove anything. Tipping the glass back, she let the alcohol slide down her throat and set it down without flinching as she felt a presence. Someone had taken up residence next to her. Glancing their way, the intensity of her stare had been renewed; electric blue irises that only those who knew her best would recognise bored into the head of the other.
They would not quite see the curl of Ekaterina Markovy’s perfectly painted cherry-red lips as she allowed herself a smirk behind the mask.
