Quick Q: Can you guys read CDs and floppy disks? How about tape drives?

Yes. Most of your data formats are decodable by our brains, and our natural magnetic sensitivity allows us to read floppy disks and tape drives. In fact, we can do so much better than most human-designed devices, allowing us to make full use of the nano-scale technology involved.

To use a metaphor, to a Cybertronian, your tapes and disks are like a book where each page only has a single word. I should say, however, just because we can read this data should not imply it is easy, especially for younger bots. A common complaint from this demographic describes it as "like reading from a giant human dictionary".

Data processing is a very important political issue on Cybertron. The Guardian Prime Edicts from about 5 million years ago made "literacy chips" the right of all Cybertronians, allowing the population to read any binary format that isn't encrypted. Of course, many of us transform into tape-storing and tape-playing devices—though these days only a few stalwarts still keep those old forms. Rewind increasingly has to explain what his name means!

Naturally when organizations like Triple-I or Sector Seven discovered how easily these systems were for us to read, they developed more secure technology—namely optical storage such as compact discs. We can still decipher them, but we can't read them natively, like we can with magnetic storage.

In this way, the interaction of human and Cybertronian civilizations causes technology to advance.

Dear Vector Prime, what is the GDO, which stands for "Global Development Organization"? And how is this related to Transformers in general?

Dear Organization Optimizer,

The Global Development Organization was originally founded in one universe with the aim of protecting the planet Earth against existential threats. Unfortunately the group became convinced that anything that was not subject to GDO oversight was an existential threat to them, and thus the planet.

Any organization which wasn't destroyed was suborned, and GDO became even more powerful. Formerly independent projects, such as the Institute of Intelligence and Information's artificial intelligence software (Technology and Operational Research (Quantum)), or the VEhicle NOMads of the Mechanically Augmented Saharan Khanate were repurposed for GDO's control of the world.

When the Autobot/Decepticon war reached Earth, both sides were taken by surprise when the GDO's Skywatch satellites took out their ships, sending them crashing to the ground. Pursued by the GDO's Terrorism Reaction Force in Mobility Enhancing Cerebral-Harmonized suits, the two sides were forced to put away their differences in an attempt to survive. They fled to the last region on Earth that had managed to escape GDO control, the Sovereign Kalistani Autonomous Region, under the control of General Courtney A. Krieger.

The general and the Cybertronians worked out an alliance to oppose the GDO, and with the addition of transformer technology, the Kalistani resistance managed to slowly expand the free regions of Earth, liberating humanity from the GDO's near omnipresent control.
