Don't go looking for Briarfield. It's gone. The borough council saw sense and razed the place at last. Maybe they'll build something useful.

I wish they'd told me. I'd have loved to walk among the broken ruins of the place. Listen, I'd say to the twisted steel and the heaps of asbestos. Look. Here I am. We're here at the end of all the stories. I'm still here, you're dead, and that means I've won.

Those stories are all true, unless they're not. I can't say, because they fade away— like bad dreams, like the stench of pipe tobacco, like the ruins of a school.

It was morning assembly, and the Headmaster was absent. Mr Hillingdon, the most senior teacher present, strode onto the stage to the lectern, looked down at the hundreds of dull, bored eyes staring up at him, and began:

"It's funny, isn't it, hearing words you never heard before, and you wonder what they mean. Anyone who's been in my lab has seen when we've heated stuff over Bunsen burners, how we use those steel tripod stands to hold whatever it is you're heating over the flame. You know the ones? with three metal legs and a ring at the top to rest the beaker on.

"Anyway, one of the third-years was heating something up during the lesson, and forgot that these tripod stands, being made of metal, get pretty hot. And she was clearing it away at the end, and accidentally picked it up. And of course she dropped it, and she said, 'oh, fuck it.'"

The atmosphere changed abruptly as several hundred people's boredom levels dropped, then remembered not to be so uncool as to look interested.

"Well, I'd never heard this word before, so I went over to her and said, 'What does this mean, this word?' But she wouldn't tell me. And I was kind of mystified... That lesson was over then, but next period I had the sixth-formers in, so I asked THEM whether any of them knew what this word meant. And do you know, none of them knew either!"

"I'd put it to the back of my mind, but when I got home that night I was watching a film, and do you know, it had that word in it too. What a coincidence, to hear it twice in one day! So I got very excited. I phoned up the BBC and asked them whether they knew what the word meant. The person I talked to couldn't tell me, but she said she'd get someone to ring me back just as soon as she'd asked the other people in her department. A few minutes later, they phoned me back and told me what the word meant... the meaning of the word… is… SEXUAL INTERCOURSE."

He paused.

"...with a TRIPOD STAND?!"
