The importance of the Chess Parallels for TrisQuia reveals not only a lot about their Roles in their Story & their Dynamic but also about their Personalities themselves, so here is a little Deep Dive…
Tristan and Juquia resembling Chess Pieces:
Juquia being the Black King, holding so much power, yet she can barely use it for herself, knowing if she leaves her cage a harsh Fate awaits her while Tristan is the White Queen who will do everything in his Power to reach her. Yet they both start on the other side, just looking and not fully understanding each other. They understand their roles, but not the true meaning behind them. If the Queen beats the King, it will be a Game Over but if you continue to drag it on (read; mage association)… In this sense the Game Over isn’t that Tristan is beating her but her Role as the King. Her Role as the mighty figure will be gone. A Game Over means to leave the chess board (read; eloping). But it takes until Tristan figures this out. Because beating to Juquia is just Leaving her comfort Zone. Juquia simply assumes obeying the rules and society will make things easier. She is probably right. Tristan being the Colour White resembles also him taking the first step.
I just wanted to share this bits. I thought about it for a long time now. Chess is also a „rather important“ plot point in Gottfried von Straßburgs „Tristan“ and is something both Tristan and Juquia enjoy. So this also adds to it.
