So I’ve just finished a long overdue personal deep-dive as I FINALLY got round to checking out Korn’s entire back-catalogue, and while I can attest that these guys have released some proper blinding top-notch albums over the years, there’s just one overall problem with every single one ...
THIS:
They have NEVER produced ANYTHING that can truly compare to their truly astounding eponimous debut album, which is generally regarded as the record which gave birth to nu metal. It’s a stone-cold MASTERPIECE.
It’s angry, and it’s filthy, and it’s deeply fucked up, and it’s INCREDIBLY harrowing to listen to at times (not least the truly haunting closer, Daddy). It’s also fiendishly intelligent, thoroughly brilliant and, at least for the time, completely unique, a genuine game-changer.
NOT LEAST in the true standout tracks, Blind, Ball Tongue, Divine, Shoots & Ladders, Lies and Helmet In the Bush. Seriously choice cuts that STILL impress today after over a quarter century of imitations.
This year Korn released a proper blinder, Requiem, which is one of the very best records they’ve ever put out into the world. But it’s STILL not in the same league as their debut. And you know what? I don’t think they ever WILL come out with anything this good again. Some albums are just TOO INCREDIBLE to equal.
Like genuine musical lightning in a bottle ...
