Jenkins Orphanage Band (Charleston, SC, 1928)
We are familiar with Louis Armstrong’s stay at the Colored Waif’s Home in New Orleans; but how many know of The Jenkins Orphanage Band from Charleston, South Carolina? It was the first black instrumental group formed in the state (1895), and by the 1920s, the group was so large it toured with five separate bands, and even appeared at the 1927 New York premiere of the play Porgy. Cat Anderson, Jabbo Smith, Freddie Green and Trummy Young were all graduates of this band. Via a tweet from Ethan Iverson, here is rare footage from 1928, which comes from the University of South Carolina Fox Movietone Archive.
