TRUE STORY

-I am proud to say that I was part of the successful womyn’s march against (trigger warning: not my president) Donald Drumpf(which is the brave and funny way to spell the name). -I was (trigger warning: prehensile grip privilege) holding a sign that said “delete your account” and was chanting “Investigating emails is harassing females”. -I had (trigger warning: bipedal motion privilege)walked half of a block, when I saw a CISHET white man who was (trigger warning: violent assault) manspreading on a bench. He was wearing a hat that had the most offensive phrase in the English language (trigger warning: hate speech and invalidation of the experiences of all marginalized groups): make America great again. -I marched up to (trigger warning: evil gender specification)him and asked “what are you doing here? This is a place for womyn and minorities to feel safe in expressing their peaceful opinions that all white people should die!” -He looked at me and (trigger warning: abuse and harassment) smiled “oh you didn’t know? My president, Donald J Trump, who represents only white men, has made it legal to rape anyone who isn’t a white male. I’m just taking a break from my job installing air conditioning units and looking for my next victim.” -I was shaking so much that one of my safety pins fell off. Just as I sensed my voting rights being taken away, a helicopter landed, and YAS QUEEN Hillary stepped out. -She dodged bullet after bullet of sniper fire as she hurdled towards the man. She stopped in front of him and said “now that’s what I call Trumped up sexism”, which was very funny and relatable. -The man exploded and all 500 trillion brave womyn(numbers confirmed by the New York Times) cheered and applauded as she flew off with Bill, who was talking about how Emma Watson is a great feminist.

Welcome

Hello. I write this first post from the couch of my friend’s aunt in Georgetown, it’s January 20, 2017 and Donald Trump was just inaugurated. The reality that the Obama family has left the White House is enough to leave me incapacitated, but I am anything but. Tomorrow is the Women’s March on Washington, and I am participating. This will be my second political rally, but the first was on a much, much smaller scale; simply for the locals around UNC-Chapel Hill campus. This one is more important. This one is more impactful. This one is going to be a part of history, for a long, long time. One day, juniors in high school taking AP US History will learn about today and tomorrow, and the fact that substantially more people were at the march than the inauguration. Today is a loss for the feminist cause, but tomorrow in an incredible win.

Apart from the knowledge that tomorrow is going to be the most important thing I have done, I am unbelievably excited just to be among the other marchers. Not only are there such public figures as Gloria Steinem, Amy Schumer, and Zendaya, the “average” citizens are people very much like me; who believe in equality over discrimination, love over hate, and respect over judgment. Adults have warned me for the past few days about staying safe tomorrow, but we marchers are those in favor of love, everyone will be looking out for each other. This is what America is really about.

When I heard President Obama speak in October of 2016, he stated that “citizen” is the most important title in the hierarchy of the American government. I fully believe in this sentiment. More than a million loving men and women will gather tomorrow to show our resilience for civil and equal rights in response to the most hate-filled campaign we have ever experienced. These people are those who believe that the next four years can be defined by our fight for love rather than the government’s tolerance and exhibition of hate. In 2004, Barack Obama said “Yes We Can.” Well he did. And I will thank him, and fight for him, every day because of it. We are nasty women, and we are stronger together.

Scott Pruitt -- EPA

Trump announced today that he would nominate Scott Pruitt, Oklahoma Attorney General, to head the EPA.  

Perhaps we should first discuss what the role entails.  The EPA is an AGENCY (of the government) dedicated to PROTECTING the ENVIRONMENT.  Well, now that that’s done, let’s look at Pruitt’s qualifications.

Pruitt has spent most of his career suing the EPA on behalf of oil and gas interests like Oklahoma utilities unwilling to take on the burdens of additional regulation of their coal-fired plants.  He has even sued the EPA on their Clean Power Plan (remember he will be charged with protecting the environment) and criticized the agency in a congressional hearing.  All of Pruitt's anti-EPA suits to-date have failed, so he’s not even good at being anti-environment.  

In 2014, the NY Times reported Pruitt sent a letter to the EPA claiming Federal regulators were grossly overestimating the amount of air pollution caused by energy companies drilling new natural gas wells in his state.  But the three-page letter was written by lawyers for Devon Energy, one of Oklahoma’s biggest oil and gas companies, and was delivered to him by Devon’s chief of lobbying.  Pruitt had copied and pasted the letter onto Oklahoma state letterhead. https://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/07/us/politics/energy-firms-in-secretive-alliance-with-attorneys-general.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage®ion=CColumn&module=MostViewed&version=Full&src=mv&WT.nav=MostViewed&_r=0

In a WalletHub ranking of the “Greenest States”, Oklahoma rates 45th overall, including 47th in environmental quality, 48th in lowest water quality, 47th in lowest % of recycled municipal solid waste.  Are you old enough to remember what happened in Bhopal, India in 1984? As a result of that and a similar incident in West Virginia, Congress passed a law requiring communities to be informed of hazardous materials in their midst and to plan for possible chemical emergencies. Pruitt is now the 3rd Trump appointee whose beliefs run almost completely counter to the mission of the department they will be running.  If all are confirmed, Pruitt would join Ben Carson (HUD) and Betsy DeVos (Education) as people who would be intent on completely dismantling or changing the mission of their departments but have no real experience doing so.
